'Tis the season for brides and today our guest blogger is Susan M. Heim, author and editor of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Here Comes the Bride which will be released in June 2012. Susan shares.....

It all starts with a simple question: "Will you marry me?" How rarely we realize what a tidal wave those few words will unleash! As soon as the pact is made, the floodgates open, and lives are changed forever. At times, the most joyous occasion of our lives can become a re-enactment of the Hatfields vs. the McCoys! Sweet-tempered girls become Bridezillas, and easygoing guys are ready to head for the hills. Planning a wedding is a process that can test the mettle of any relationship. But a wedding can also be the source of glorious memories, long-awaited reunions, and hilarious family tales. Often, mishaps that seemed dire at the time become our most-quoted family lore. I had so much fun reading and selecting the stories for Chicken Soup for the Soul: Here Comes the Bride. The story below, "A Wedding Gone to the Dogs," is just one of the 101 stories of marital mishaps and precious moments in this book. Enjoy!

A Wedding Gone to the Dogs

My brother-in-law and his fiancée were getting married in a beautiful park in upstate New York. Their wedding plans were a little different from most couples, to say the least. They arranged to have their two dogs, Sadie and Clarence, attired in wedding garb. Our daughters, then six and eight, were asked to escort the dogs down a narrow walkway covered in rose petals to the awaiting bride and groom, who would be standing inside a pristine gazebo.

The wedding day arrived, and things seemed to be off to a good start as Sadie, draped in a gown of flowers, sauntered down the aisle led by our youngest daughter. She took a seat in the front row as Sadie, her tongue hanging out of the side of her mouth, obediently situated herself beside the radiant bride. Impressed guests nodded happily.

Next came our oldest daughter leading a tuxedo-clad Clarence up the aisle. As Clarence got closer and closer to his master, his eyes focused on Sadie as she sat staring in his direction. Before our daughter knew what was happening, Clarence broke free, charging toward his canine bride-to-be faster than a bull released from a bull pen. Reaching Sadie, Clarence tenderly pressed his nose against Sadie's. The wedding guests gasped in unison. The bride and groom exchanged anxious glances while the minister attempted to take control.

"Friends, originally we were all invited here today to witness the union of two special human beings in Holy Matrimony. But as we all know, life is full of unexpected surprises. Surprise can be a good thing. Marriage should be filled with unexpected surprises as Sadie and Clarence have shown us today. So, let's admit that this wedding has gone to the dogs_ and have a doggone good time!"

The air filled with joyful laughter as my brother-in-law and his fiancée exchanged wedding vows and kisses. At their feet, Sadie and Clarence looked on. ~~~~Mary Z. Smith

And now a bit about Susan:

Favorite Bible Verse - Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)

My Thoughts: This collection of short bride tales will surely tickle your funny bone, help you realize that you're not the only bride whose wedding does not go perfectly or who had a really bad moment-in-time that she'd rather forget. Reading these little tales brings to memory my own wedding where I had dreamed as most girls in the 1950's did of the "Southern Belle" type of wedding dress - mine was a lovely "cocktail length" dress with little jacket. Practical. It also brought to mind my three daughters' weddings. All three wore lovely, absolutely beautiful gowns with short trains and lovely veils. Although two were off of the samples rack and drastically discounted. Three stunningly beautiful brides. One nearly fainted at her reception because there was no air conditioning on that hot summer North Carolina day. Another had a bit of snow in the Tennessee mountains on that Christmasy wedding day.

One story in particular stood out to me, #48 "Father of the Bride." This was so heart warming and truly shows how a father's years for and prays for the best for his dear daughters. But through the book your heart will be warmed and your fancy tickled. There cartoons (see above) on some of the stories that will tickle your funny bone. I have shared my copy with a soon-to-be-bride and I told her that when those moments come that she feels "down," she should pick up a bit of Chicken Soup for the soul - for brides.
