This is an excellent book about how Christians can engage with culture in late modernity. James Davison Hunter writes with an exceptional grasp of history and sociology. He critiques the approaches of the Christian Right, Christian Left and Neo-Anabaptists in engaging culture, largely through the political arena in the case of the Right and Left. Hunter offers the approach of "faithful presence within" the structures of society. This book focuses extensively on institutions as opposed to individualistic efforts, which Hunter criticizes as inadequate for fostering change. While Hunter notes that American Christianity is driven by populism, he laments that it lacks cultural sway because it has little ground in the influential institutions of society.
