This book is the first for author Pam Ingebritson, and it's a terrific start! There are several main characters (Robbie, Melanie, Gina, Sam, Brian, Eric, and Will) with other lesser characters rounding out the cast. The story is easy to follow, even with the twists and turns that mark this mystery, not too simple as to bore the reader nor too complex to confuse and frustrate. Groundwork is laid from the beginning in a patchwork of facts, actions, emotions, and results. The author's way of presenting the story from many points of view, not just one or two, brings color and fullness to the events. Unlike many authors, Ms. Ingebritson does not rely on foul language or detailed descriptions of violence and gore to build a suspenseful tale. Instead, she weaves scenes of commonplace life with events that can happen to ordinary people. Lessons in faith, forgiveness, honesty, and surviving cruelty and hardship are gently sprinkled throughout the story without the "preachy" attitude some may expect. This book is suitable for young adults and up, showing how God can use past tragedies to create glowing, promising futures. Kudos to Ms. Ingebritson on a job well done. One question remains as the book ends: when will the sequel come out?
