Product Description

The Certainty of the Faith gives Christians greater confidence in their own beliefs, and gives them tools to defend their faith in dialogue with postmodern man. It offers an overview of western philosophy, exposing the uncertainty produced when God is not recognized as the source of truth. It also analyzes key arguments of Christian apologists such as C.S. Lewis, Francis Schaeffer, Norman Geisler, Cornelius Van Til, John Frame, and others. Finally, it suggests practical guidelines for answering some of the most difficult questions we face: the existence of God, the authority of Scripture, other religions, evolution, hell, and the problem of evil.

Endorsements

“This book does not simply say, “here are the answers and I dare you to think.” It actually engages the reader in a warm and relational way. Rich does an excellent job of reviewing questions that unbelievers wrestle with, as well as giving believers examples of good questions to ask unbelievers. It is obvious that he writes from the presupposition that relationships are important. His love for people is evident. Students will read The Certainty of the Faith and want to have coffee with this guy.” —Rod Mays, National Coordinator, Reformed University Ministries

“Richard Ramsey has given us a solid, reliable and practical outlook on Christian apologetics. He goes directly to the central issues facing Christians as they share their faith with others in our day. I believe that God will use this book in the lives of many followers of Christ around the world.” —Richard L. Pratt Jr. President of Third Millenium Ministries

Editorial Reviews

In THE CERTAINTY OF FAITH Richard Ramsay draws on decades of cross-cultural ministry and mentoring experience to provide a practical introduction to apologetics in service to the gospel. Ramsay shows that obstacles to faith are not only intellectual but also emotional and, most profoundly, spiritual; and he affirms that only God's Spirit can give life to the dead and faith to the unbelieving. He therefore proposes a multi-pronged apologetic-evangelistic strategy that blends humility (concerning ourselves), confidence (concerning our God and his Word), and gentle respect (concerning our unbelieving friends). Those who want to present Christ's truth and grace persuasively and winsomely will find help here.
In the Certainty of the Faith , Ramsay appeals to us to adopt a posture of humble certainty in our defense of the faith by showing how truth is not anchored to us but to the living God. His apologetic approach is clear, sensitive, adaptive and bold. It is practically applied in detail and honesty to some of the toughest questions we face about our faith. Good discussion questions at the end of each chapter enhance individual and small group learning. I recommend this book as a terrific aid to our evangelistic endeavors on campus.
Other books have made the point that presuppositional apologetics is compatible with the use of evidences, but few have shown practical ways of bringing these together. The Certainty of the Faith presents an "integrated" apologetic which uses many of the traditional types of argument as they are appropriate to different practical situations, always honoring the biblical teachings about how we come to know God. The author, Richard Ramsey, is well-informed about modern culture, science and philosophy as well as biblical theology. The book is an excellent study tool, with graphics and questions for review and reflection.
Richard Ramsey has given us a solid, reliable and practical outlook on Christian apologetics. He goes directly to the central issues facing Christians as they share their faith with others in our day. I believe that God will use this book in the lives of many followers of Christ around the world.
Richard Ramsay has provided college students and, specifically, those who minister to college students, a useful and practical manual giving 'honest answers to honest questions'. This book does not simply say, 'here are the answers and I dare you to think.' It actually engages the reader in a warm and relational way. Richard does an excellent job of reviewing questions that unbelievers wrestle with, as well as giving believers examples of good questions to ask unbelievers. It is obvious that he writes from the presupposition that relationships are important. His love for people is evident. Students will read The Certainty of the Faith and want to have coffee with this guy.
Rich Ramsay addresses the primary crucial issue facing the church today. In my seminary experience in the 1970's, more than one professor addressed "the authority of Scripture, also more than once. Rich Ramsay brings this up again, for another generation and from several different directions in his book about the certainty of the faith. I recommend it and will recommend it in the future to my students and friends.
