Publisher's Description

She Wants the Freedom of the Open Plains.
He Wants the Prestige of a Successful Career.
Neither is Ready for What Comes Instead.

The train to Garber, Texas, is supposed to bring life's next victory to Nicholas Lovelace. Instead, it gets held up by robbers who are thwarted by the last person Nick ever expected--Anne Tillerton from back home in Prairie Lea.

Anne's been hiding away as a buffalo hunter. She's only in town to find their runaway cook, but the woman flees--leaving Anne with her infant son. With Nick the only person Anne knows in town, the two form an unlikely team as they try to figure out what to do with the child.

But being in town means acting and dressing for polite society--and it's not going well for Anne. Meanwhile, Nick's work is bringing new pressures, and being seen with a rough-around-the-edges woman isn't helping his reputation. Caught between their own dreams, a deepening relationship, and others' expectations, can the pair find their way to love?

Caught in the Middle Book#3 in The Ladies of Caldwell County Series

    Regina Jennings

This was my first time reading Regina Jennings. Somebody posted it was available for free download, and I thought it looked interesting. Gave it a try this weekend and really enjoyed it. I am finally getting used to the Kindle app on my Samsung Galaxy Note II phone. I was hard-core hold the book, but I am seeing this benefit. Only need one hand to hold it, can read it dim or no light, no need to store books. However, if I really LOVE it (like ALL of Jen Turanos books), I would probably have to get the hard copy Also, cannot share my books with friends, so thats a bummer.

    But, back to the book!

This book has lots of detail regarding both the old west, and the small towns. The author did a good job painting the pictures for my minds eye. I enjoyed the way she wove God into the story in a realistic way. She deals with domestic violence in an interesting way as well. It is slowly introduced and the facts are added over time so that you are not thrown into the middle of it in a harsh, hard-to-face way (some stories are just to gruesome and take the pleasure of reading away; at least for me and in my opinion). Anne is so interesting, and rough around the edges. She wears mens clothing most of the time, hiding her vulnerabilities. But eventually, she discovers a feminine/maternal side she did not know she had. Nicholas is very likeable, albeit nave in the beginning regarding his solicitors and how government / politics are sometimes corruptible. He has a gentle soul you want to get to know more. The characters develop nicely.

I read this book without reading anything more in the series and feel there is no problem reading it as a stand-alone story. I recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars

I offer my honest opinion for no compensation.

Oh my, this is another winner from Regina. I have really enjoyed this series and this book is wonderful. Anne has had such a hard life and is such a strong person, I love her story. I would really encourage you to read this series, each book is better than the previous one. Great job Regina, I really do enjoy your writing!

Annie Oakley, move over to make room for Dead-Eye Anne. In this historical western, Anne grew up in the woods of Ohio without a mother, with a father who at best paid little attention to his daughter besides providing her a roof over her head. After a short abusive marriage, she's shunned any suspicious attention from men, working in Indian Territory as a buffalo hunter and wearing the rough clothing of a man to disguise her figure. She has trusted no one but herself; she's callous, tough, hard as nails, and vulnerable.

When the hunt group's cook ran away, Anne was sent to Garber to bring her back or hire another cook. One of the train's male passengers attempted a foolish rescue of one of the young ladies during a hold-up and got a gun aimed at his head for his efforts. When the leader ordered him killed, Anne had no choice but to rescue him using her considerable sharp-shooting skills. Nicholas Lovelace was in her debt.

In a series of wacky turn of events, the cook Anne sought ran off leaving her baby for Anne to take care of. No one could have been more ill-suited for that task than she. Anne knew the baby's father and set out to track him down and make him take responsibility for the baby himself. But that was easier said than done.

Nicholas Lovelace lived in Garber, TX as transportation expert. He supplied the lumber to the local railroad magnate. Nick was not who Anne expected. Even though she knew of him in the past through her friendship with his sister, Molly, Anne had him pegged as a dandy and pencil pusher. But his heroism during the train robbery surprised her. And he kept surprising her the more she was around him. Once Tessa, the baby's mom, disappeared, Nick helped Anne find a suitable place to stay in Garber and provided her with employment to pay for her lodging.

I have to admit that this is one of the most unusual westerns I have ever read. The author keeps the reader guessing just how this story could possibly end, especially when Anne becomes attached to little Sammy. Nick and Anne make an odd couple, even when they are working together to take care of the baby. In the end, however, the author makes it all work out. The two adults are like iron against iron, and they grow as individuals, even in their relationship to God. I enjoyed reading this book. If you like non-stop action, western historical fiction and light romance, then you'll enjoy this book.

If time spent reading is a good judge of a book then I'd I have to say that Caught In The Middle is a good one. I had a hard time putting it down and finished it in a day. Every time I put it down it seemed to keep tugging me back, just one more page, just one more chapter... You know the drill.

Since I hadn't read any of Regina Jennings' books before I didn't have any preconceived ideas on how the story would go. I have to say that I was quite surprised by the two main characters, they jump to conclusions, unintentionally hurt each other's feelings, make mistakes. Through all of that they manage to take care of a baby, work together, go into politics, make a few friends and a few enemies, forge a stronger faith, and they just might find love.

Caught In The Middle was a great story and will take you on some unexpected detours along the way.

If you enjoy historical fiction I would definitely recommend this book. It has a bit of everything; drama, ethical dilemmas, politics, humor, train robbers, heartbreak, romance, and best of all a happy ending.

I do have to say that the cover of Caught In The Middle is one of the cutest ones I have seen in my reading so far this year. The Bethany House team have outdone themselves once again.

(I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own)

I really enjoyed this latest title by Regina Jennings.

Caught in the Middle has a heroine who is deeply scarred from her husband's abuse. She's been hiding since escaping his abuse -- working as a buffalo hunter. Now she finds herself stuck in a town waiting for some deadbeat to collect his son.

Nick believes his life is blessed because God never allows anything to go wrong in his life. Then he reconnects with Anne, and begins to discover challenges. Will his faith be shaken as he tries to discover who he really is?

In this book the hero and heroine are characters that I enjoyed spending time with. Their challenges and questions are similar to those I've had. Where is God when things start going wrong? Does He still love me? Can He love me? Why would He take something from me that I've begun to love? Yet these questions were wrapped in a story I completely engaged in...with everything from laughter to tears. The cover alone is reason to buy the book, but the story within the cover is one that will engage readers who love Christian historical fiction with a side of humor.
