Tell us a little about yourself. Im the author of seven historical books for 8- to 12-year-olds, including Secrets in Stone: All about Maya Hieroglyphs and To Be a Princess. Ive published two books in the Jobs in History Series: Cowboys and Coffin Makers: 100 19th-Century Jobs You Might Have Feared or Fancied and Ballplayers and Bonesetters: 100 Ancient Aztec and Maya Jobs You Might Have Adored or Abhorred. Obviously, I adore history!
What was your motivation behind this project? I thought it would be wonderful to research and write about the jobs of the Old Testament. After six months of research, I have to say that I have the greatest respect for the people who raised their families in the Bible Lands at this time in history. Water was scarce, tools were primitive, and lifespans were short, yet they faced the future with hope by working together in their family groups and nourishing their spirits with faith, music, crafts, gardens and stories.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My hope is that children will have fun finding out more about what the characters they read about in the Bible did for a living. I also hope Sunday School teachers will find the book a useful resource.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: The one hundred jobs in the book are organized in eleven chapters: Farming Village Jobs, Royal Jobs, City Jobs, Building and Digging Jobs, Fiery Jobs, Crafts Jobs, What-to-Wear Jobs, Spicy, Scented Jobs, At-Sea Jobs, Religious Jobs and Military Jobs.
