Henry and his down-on-his-luck father are selling Christmas trees in New York City for extra money. When they leave, they give the extra trees to construction workers who helped them. With this unexpected gift comes an unexpected generosity-the workers show up at Henry's home to help them rebuild their house with milled wood from the trees. Since 2007 a new tradition with the Rockerfeller Tree has begun: each year the tree is milled into lumber that the Habitat for Humanity uses to build a simple home for a family in need.

Opening in Depression-era New York City, The Carpenter's Gift tells the story of eight-year-old Henry and his father selling Christmas trees. They give a Christmas tree to construction workers building Rockefeller Center and celebrate together. Through the kindness of the construction workers and neighbors, Henry gets his wish for a nice, warm home to replace his family's drafty shack. He plants a pinecone from that first Rockefeller Center Tree. As an old man, Henry repays the gift by donating the enormous tree that has grown from that pinecone. After bringing joy to thousands as the Rockefeller Center tree, its wood will be used to build a home for another family in need.

JIM LAMARCHE has illustrated over 20 children's books, some of which he has also written. His lushly rendered illustrations appear in our recent release, The Day Tiger Rose Said Goodbye, by Jane Yolen. His work has been awarded the Parents magazine Best Book of the Year; the Irma S. and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Picture Books; and the American Bookseller Association Pick-of-the-List. He lives in central California with his wife and children.
