I have purchased a great many things from Christianbook.com over the years, but this by far has been one of the greatest investments I've ever made. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Calvin's thoughts, and have found his commentaries and "The Institutes..." to be a well-spring of knowledge and insight from God.

I just purchased this set of books. As far as I am concerned this set of commentaries is second to none. I am well pleased with the way the books are bound and printed. There is a lot more to these books than meets the eye. I am looking forward to many years of use out of these books.

A very comprehensive analysis of the bible, and although it was written 500 years ago it still relates completely to society today

This was a fantastic purchase. The quality of binding is good, more than what I expected for paying 120.00 for a 23 volume set. Of course you have to treat all books with care, and with care I am sure that these will last my lifetime. The print itself looks as though it has been photocopied from another print which is just fine. It's all clear and easy to read. The best part is reading these commentaries. John Calvin, whether you agree with his viewpoint on everything or not, is an extremely good writer and excellent thinker. He is thoughtful, historical, and thorough in his interpretation of the scriptures. I have not read this translation of the Institutes yet, but I have read the Institutes and it is simply the second best book I have ever read, next the the Word of God. Buy these, read them, enjoy them and be challenged.

This is an outstanding value, and a wonderful addition to one's christian library - and I would say at this price, a necessary one. The commentaries are the preferred (In my mind) CTS edition - that's Calvin Translation Society - done by scholars in the mid 19th century in beautiful, rich English, with all the footnotes intact. Bakers edition (which is here offered) is the red hardcover, 500th anniversary edition - and is more attractively, and sturdily, bound than their old brown backs that they produced a decade ago. Actually, the Baker edition seems to be an exact duplication of the fine old Eerdmans blue backs of the 1950's. The paper used in Bakers present red backs is admittedly somewhat thin, but I think acceptable (they are condensing Eerdmans volumes into fewer books) - but please do not let this impede you. One is getting here Calvin's complete commentaries with all his rich spiritual insight and doctrine at an incomparable price. Included is H. Beveridge's translation of the final edition of the Institutes - the 1559 edition. He was one of the CTS translators... If you would like the acclaimed Battles edition of 1960, CBD has this in a handsome 2 volume set. Personally, I'm not yet sure which edition I prefer of Calvin's principal work (either edition may well be fine), but of the commentaries - which is what is primarily being offered here - I definitely favor the fine old CTS version. So I heartily recommend this set - not just for young theologians, but for anyone wanting to advance, as Calvin would say, in true piety.

Contrary to the esteemed view most Protestants have of John Calvin, his work in these volumes suffers from what we call "diarrhea of the pen." Mr. Calvin clearly had an original mind (whether such was rooted in truth is another matter) but his sheltered experience in reality is demonstrated in this work. It is telling that, in contrast with Mr. Calvin's protracted discourses, God's own Son could instruct or settle disputes with merely a word or sentence and what God simply recorded as fact Mr. Calvin, rather, writes volumes. Subsequently, these verbose additions to God's revelation predisposes the argument that God's word is insufficient in the revelation of truth or in its instruction in righteousness and causes the reader to question whether Mr. Calvin's ideas originate in God or merely in man. I am certain there will be many who will disagree with me, but we are not of "Apollos, nor Cephas, nor Luther, nor Calvin" but we are all of Christ and His alone.
