Product Description

Of all the various movements that have affected the evangelical Christian Church in the early years of the 21st century, young, restless and reformed, or 'New Calvinists', are among the most significant. Jeremy Walker acknowledges the difficulties of tackling this subject, which he approaches with insight, kindness and some caution.

He writes of his desire to provide 'a balanced and appropriately irenic assessment' as he considers the contribution of various personalities.

At the core you will hear names such as John Piper, Mark Dever, C.J. Mahaney, Al Mohler, Mark Driscoll, Matt Chandler, Kevin DeYoung, Ligon Duncan, Tim Keller, Don Carson, and Wayne Grudem. On the websites and in the blogosphere names like Justin Taylor and Tim Challies are prominent. More on the fringes, and with a much more ambivalent relationship, are men like R. C. Sproul and John MacArthur on the one hand and James MacDonald and Francis Chan on the other.

If you are not sure what to think of the New Calvinism, you need to read this book. If you have friends struggling with it, you need to give them this book. If you are being reproached for not embracing it, use the arguments and cautions of this book to defend yourself. If you are in danger of rejecting the whole of New Calvinism, you need the care of this book to restrain you.

Jeremy Walker, pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church, Crawley, England, presents a disturbing book. That may be an understatement.

The new Calvinism has blossomed in the USA, and it's influence among Evangelicals and young Fundamentalists cannot be ignored.

Walker tells us that the passion for doctrine, expository preaching, and spirituality is a strong point of the new Calvinism. He commends them for their ability to use modern technology to extend their reach and influence. There are many commendable things about the new Calvinists.

On the other hand, there is room for concern. Though the new Calvinists are not monolithic, there are a number of concerns with the movement as a whole, as well as with some of the leadership.

One of the concerns is the lack of doctrinal and practical discernment. From working with one whose practices are defined by pragmatism (Rick Warren) to dialoguing with one who is a modalist (T.D. Jakes), there seems to be a lack of discernment among leaders of the new Calvinists.

There's also the issue of the practical hero worship. Leaders of the new Calvinists are put on pedestals where men should not be placed. At times it seems that it is taboo to question them.

Walker does a good job of balancing his address of the pros and cons of the new Calvinism, considering that it is such a hard thing to do.

In the end, Walker encourages us that we hold firmly to that which is good; but he also tells us that it is much more important that we follow Christ with a holy passion.

We can only hope that this book will be taken as it needs to be taken: as a book that encourages the good, and desires to help correct that which is not good.

I would certainly recommend this book for those who have any concern about church trends, are involved in the new Calvinism, and who may wish to learn more about the new Calvinism.
