Tell us a little about yourself. I am a passionate follower of Jesus Christ who serves as Director of Recovery Ministries at Heartland Community Church in Rockford IL. Growing up on the streets of a small Italian neighborhood in the midst of Black and Spanish Harlem, Bill Rieser had an inspiring ability to play basketball. It was his identity. His opponents called him White Jesus because of his miracles on the court and major colleges recruited him. He had a 44-inch vertical leap and could dunk a basketball any way he chose. He had a pro agent in college and it seemed his story was written Bill Rieser was destined for the NBA. A career-halting injury and opposition with a college coach ended his career. A story with a seemingly pre-determined outcome was destroyed, and so was Bill Riesers identity. He spent the next 15 years of his life building resentment and blame on others for all that had gone wrong. A fast and furious lifestyle followed. Finally, the house of cards tumbled down when, facing total devastation and the loss of his family and health, Bill exposed his wild-card lifestyle to his wife. With grace God intervened. Bills wife, Carolyn, offered a second chance if he would accept Christ. A 180-lifestyle change was in order and as Bill surrendered all to Christ, forgiveness and mercy became his three-point shot on the fourth quarter buzzer. Today, Bill desires to share how Gods mercy extends to each of us, regardless of the depth, darkness and power of the struggle. He remains active in ministry and shares his story as a way to remind others that God is faithful and has a plan for their lives. No matter the past God has a future.
What was your motivation behind this project? I have known for over 5 years that God wanted me to write a book about what He has done in my life in addition to documenting the lessons I have learned from simply trusting God, believing God, obeying God, praying to God and waiting on God. The results of those practices have been nothing short of miraculous and they needed to be told so that when people read about them, they too can apply the same principles and experience the same awesome God blessing them like He has done for me.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I am hoping that people who do not know what it means to have a passionate personal relationship with Jesus Christ will learn how to do that and be moved to enter into that relationship. For those who are Christians, my hope is that they would be encouraged in their faith to trust God for the impossible, to experience the joy of forgiveness and reconciliation in their relationships, to be convicted to take their prayer life to deeper levels and practice childlike faith trusting God in every area of their lives. Most of all my prayer is that anyone who reads this book would have a renewed "Hope" in God by living a passionate life completely surrendered to the purposes of God.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? God continues to impact my life with His grace and mercy and reminded me many times during this project that He is "Faithful" and is still the same yesterday today and forever.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Mike Breaux has been a solid mentor through his teaching and personal time he has invested in me. The teachings of Jim Cymbala of the Brooklyn Tabernacle and Carter Conlon of Times Square Church in NYC have influenced my life to seek a life of prayer and faith that has changed my life in miraculous ways.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I am very passionate about Prayer and Faith and how that can affect our lives in today's world. I enjoy speaking to people about prayer and how it can affect your life. I am passionate about speaking to Men and challenging them to live out the principles I have outlined in the book. I also love to speak to recovery groups and share the hope and story of how God has set me free from a life of addictions and hurts that plagued me for 37 years. In addition to that I enjoy having my wife by my side when we get to encourage couples at churches, retreats or conferences.
