Product Description

We live in an age of activism, of challenge, when the doors of the future swing wide, beckoning men of vision. Any church is safe in the hands of people who possess a prophetic vision and a historian's wisdom. Not only must one peer steadily into the future, but always there must be a strong and steady appreciation for the foundations laid by the founders in the yesterdays. Every Nazarene will do well to read again, prayerfully, the story of the beginning days, of the heroism, of the unwhimpering sacrifice, of the bearing and forbearing, of the long hours of agony and prayer. Meet the men and women who watched by the bedside of our struggling, embattled infant church. This is designed to be used as a text. It is thoroughly documented, utterly dependable, warmly interpretive.

Timothy L. Smith's work of Nazarene History is both well researched and poorly written. His extensive (very extensive) collection of histories, stories, anecdotes, etc, involving the formation of the Holiness movement and the Nazarene Church do Mr. Smith and the rest of the commission credit, but they influence the material considerably. The strong bias and occasional deep bows to the then current hierarchy of the Nazarene Church remind you that you are reading a "commissioned" work, not necessarily a historical one. While certainly required reading for those interested in the denomination and their perspective on themselves, do read with a large grain of salt, and perhaps some water to wash down the occasional cheap shot at other Wesleyans, or gaudy genuflection towards Smith's General Superintendent. What is most interesting is to read that the same issues the Nazarene Church was struggling with then continue to be their greatest sources of consternation: a working definition of "entire sanctification" being not the least of these.

This is an excellent resource for student's of church history. This volume, by the late excellent writer, Timothy Smith, covers the history of the Church of the Nazarene. At times, the book can seemed bogged down by the politics of the Nazarene Church but in the end, it offers an insiders look into the history and information of the Church of the Nazarene.
