You don't have to be perfect???
Oh my goodness! You mean I'm not the only one that isn't the perfect Proverbs 31 wife? This book was such a refreshing take on Proverbs 31. Like the author, most times I read that notorious chapter I end up feeling like I should just beat my head against a wall because there is no way I will ever stack up. Most days it's all I can do to just keep my head above water and I'm not making any progress at all. Reading Sara's experiences with trying to be the perfect Proverbs 31 wife was so freeing for me. It made me realize that I don't have to be perfect, but I shouldn't just give up, I need to at least attempt and strive for better. It was convicting with out being condemning and above all it was filled with refreshing honesty!

Encouraging News, Great Read!
Many Christian women, like me, have a love/hate relationship with the wife described in the thirty-first chapter of the BibleâÂÂs book of Proverbs. While we love the descriptions of opportunities to bloom in many areas, there is also often guilt associated with the measuring stick that seems to show up mentally when comparing ourselves to her.
Along comes Sara HornâÂÂs book to provide some clarity to this often discussed passage from the Bible. Sara details a one year experiment she performed to see if she could in fact, be the Proverbs 31 wife. Reading the book, I found myself laughing with Sara at her cooking struggles (which also sounded hauntingly familiar!), tearing up at her descriptions of how hard it can be to say goodbye to a spouse, and closely identifying with the struggles of trying to measure up to everyone else.
The good news message of this book is that God never intended for us to try and measure up to a âÂÂone size fits allâ life plan for every woman. SaraâÂÂs candor, transparency, and ability to laugh at herself encouraged me. The more I read, the more I thought about how to spend more time focused on my relationships (with my children, husband and God) and less time worry about how IâÂÂm doing compared to a broad spectrum ideal. SaraâÂÂs book encouraged me to come up higher in some areas and give myself a break in others. Most of all, it challenged me to stay connected with the One who made me and understands my capabilities (or lack thereof), better than any other.

Brings the Proverbs 31 Wife Into the 21st Century
This book is a memoir of one year in the life of Sara Horn. Sara set out to complete a one-year experiment to live as the Proverbs 31 Wife. I think she did it.
The Proverbs 31 Wife has long been touted from pulpits as the woman Believers should aspire to emulate. I have been one of those women who wanted to be like her, but have so often failed. I am a homeschool mom, with many dreams for my children and myself. I have time during the day to think about this woman and work on putting those principles into practice. In this book, Sara brings the Proverbs 31 Wife into the 21st Century and teaches all woman, no matter what their staion, through her successes and failures how we can accomplish such a feat.
I am married with children and I want to bring my husband "good and not harm all the days of his life." I want my children to "rise up and call me blessed." In My So-Called Life, Sara has brought this woman to life and shown me how I can turn those possibilities into realities. While reading this book, I found myself more aware of my relationship and actions with my husband and children. Was I doing the Proverbs 31 Wife thing to do? No, in many cases no. But I found out how to make just the slightest, smallest change, and it was easily accomplished!
I recommend this book to any woman who has struggled to become more like the Proverbs 31 Wife. As you read about Sara's experience you will learn how your effort no matter how small can do great things and you will be transformed.
I must include this thought as part of my book review. Aside from helping me learn how to put Biblical wisdom in practice, this book also gave me another thought. The Proverbs 31 wife is NOT the only woman in the Bible. There are many honorable women in the Bible: Deborah, Ruth, Mary the mother of Jesus, Abigail, Sarah, Lydia, and on and on. They didn't all live like the Proverbs 31 woman. Every woman has her purpose and place, which is something else you will become aware of as you read this book.
On one final note, I would like to say that Sara saves the most important lesson for last. If you are familiar with the Proverbs 31 Wife, you will know how it ends.

Taking on the Martha Stewart of the Bible
My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife by Sara Horn offers hope to every woman who has ever felt intimidated by that paragon of female virtue. Horn, the wife of a of a Navy Reservist, is a free-lance writer who has always taken pride in her work, which leaves her at odds with the Martha Stewart of the Bible in Proverbs 31 who cooks the meals, sews the clothes, keeps the house clean, harvests crops, sells property, makes money, and has her husband bragging up her at the city gate while her children call her blessed. Horn is not the traditional Christian woman who stays at home, is a genius in the kitchen, and homeschools her children, and proudly so! So her quest to try and live up to this example seems almost humorous, but Horn is sincere in her desire to be a better wife and mother by embracing Martha 31, as she nicknames the unnamed woman. But Horn's husband Cliff is a better cook than she is, leaving her often discontented by his enjoyment of cooking for the family, she never manages to sew anything, and the family's circumstances change radically when Cliff can't find a job, forcing Horn to take a job at a college in North Carolina and uprooting the entire family. But what Horn, and readers, learn that it isn't about whether she can master all of Martha 31's talents, it's about whether Horn is using her God-given talents to the best of her ability to bless her husband and child. This is a vital lesson for women like me who have often felt a failure compared to Martha 31 and her seeming perfection. Horn is an engaging writer, keeping the reader entertained whether her plans are wildly successfully or crashing beyond belief. She offers hope for those of us who will never be Martha Stewart or Martha 31 that God loves us just as we are .
