Randy Singer engages readers on a page turning journey from preemptive law to astounding grace in By Reason of Insanity. Catherine O’Rourke, a Virginia Beach reporter, after going to the police to share her vision insights on a horrendous crime, finds herself placed behind bars as the prime suspect. As Catherine is going through the trial process, she is persuaded to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, which causes her to question her innocence and whether or not she was capable of committing the crimes.

This book has a strong plot structure and does not stray away from the beginning incidents. The writing is clear, with a good blend of dialogue and description. The characters are well rounded and believable. This book delivers as a suspense novel. It provides surprises, but nothing ridiculous or unrealistic. In fact, the entire book is very satisfying from a literary perspective. Although the writing is more for the young adult level and beyond, this book is recommended to anyone who likes legal thrillers or suspense novels with surprise endings. -- Timothy J. Steece, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Publisher's Weekly

Inspirational suspense novelist Singer (Directed Verdict) hooks readers from the opening courtroom scene of this tasty thriller, then spurs them through a fast trot across a storyline that just keeps delivering. Catherine O’Rourke is a seasoned reporter who covers trials for Norfolk, Virginia’s The Tidewater Times. The latest sexual abuse case she covers hits a little too close to home, and she has a series of disturbing “visions” that suggest first-hand details of the crimes. Soon she finds herself on trial as the “Avenger,” a Bible-quoting serial killer. Are her visions spiritual? Or does she have a split personality? She’s unsure of her innocence or guilt—and so are her lawyers, including the likeable high-rolling Vegas attorney, Quinn Newberg, who is famous for his insanity defenses. Singer tosses out plot twists with abandon, shattering readers’ assumptions but rarely straining their credulity. The characters’ lives unpeel like onions, with layers of interesting revelations. Christian faith plays a role in the “visions” but never feels forced. Smooth point of view changes, snappy dialogue, interesting details and unexpected humor enrich the storyline. Like the best suspense novels, the character development is sophisticated enough that readers won’t know the villain’s identity until the final pages. (May) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

This book was a waste of time. I hated reading it, and I wish I never had. It was a good many hours of my life I can never get back, and a good many thoughts I never wanted in my head. It had such promise, and wasted it all! A warning to those who do read it: the beginning has some sick material about a girl being sexually abused. I never wanted that put into my head - espcially by a Christian author! Even aside from that, it was a complete waste of time. My strong recommendation: DON'T READ IT!!!

I give the book 4 stars. It is an excellent read, and the twists and turns surprised me and kept me turning the page. Great characters and plot.4 starts instead of five because: I still like to see more Christian content in Christian fiction. The main character often drank and had hangovers, and gambled - often using dishonest methods - to pay off his debts. I cannot see that the book ended with him having a conversion, or a change of heart in those areas. That aside, it is probably the best book Singer has written

I've been looking for some good Christian authors who write fiction stories. This was my first book and I was very impressed. It kept my attention and I finished it in 3 days. I'm not a big reader, but the story was so interesting that I wanted to know what happened. I highly recommend this book and I plan to read more from this author.

Randy Singer is one of my favorite authors. The plot moves quickly in the book and drags you in immediately. I thought I had figured out the plot, but Singer threw a curve ball and the whodoneit mystery was a surprising ending. Great fictional read.
