Editorial Reviews

Watson (Troublesome Creek) sets her sweet novel in Lexington, Ky., shortly before WWI. There, Mazy Pelfrey, age 18, is struggling in secretarial school. The young sheriff from her hometown in the Kentucky mountains, Chanis Clay, is sweet on her, but Mazy is dazzled by a wealthy young man, Loyal Chambers, who begins to pay attention to her. Mazy must choose what, and who, she wants—a choice that tests her values. The details of Watson’s period setting are well researched (Sanitol liquid tooth cleanser, syrup ices). Humor plays a prominent and welcome role in the narrative: an exploding jar of sauerkraut in a root cellar starts the action with a literal bang. Mazy is an engaging character, though some readers may find her youthful innocence cloying. Faith elements are natural and unobtrusive, except for one improbable conversion. Watson offers a well-written, squeaky clean read.
Buttermilk Sky is a light and refreshing read with beautiful characters who readers will adore. Mazy Pelfrey is a gem whose selfless and naïve heart is endearing, although her naiveté can also be exasperating. Watson does an excellent job at keeping the story moving while touching on important subjects in a way that is not overbearing or heavy.
SUMMARY: After moving from small town life in the mountains of Kentucky, Mazy Pelfrey is not accustomed to life in the city of Lexington. Balancing social life, chores and studies takes up all of her time. However, when a new beau comes along, Mazy is swept off her feet. As she grows used to the new way of life, her past comes calling and Mazy is faced with decisions that will change her life forever. [Four stars.]

    A Surprisingly Delightful Read

I have been reading a great many books lately by new to me authors and Buttermilk Sky is my first read from Jan Watson. It was a lovely coming of age story about a young woman who is trying to find her own way in life. Mazy (I really liked that name) has left her small mountain town of Skip Rock and is going to secretarial school in the city. This story takes place during the year 1913. When she left, she also left the sheriff, Chanis, who is a few years older than her and very much in love with her. Though they are apart for most of the story, we get a really good characterization of both Mazy and Chanis as we are seeing life happen through both of their viewpoints. I really liked both characters. Mazy was sweet and innocent and really had to learn about the world through her own experiences before she could see the gifts she already had. She had a couple of harrowing near misses and I enjoyed seeing her relate with her city friends. Chanis was a really fun character to get to know. He was a simple fellow who for the most part knew what he wanted in life. He took care of his responsibilities and he loved Mazy with his whole heart. Some of the situations he found himself in, because he was the sheriff, had me laughing out loud even though they were serious situations that could have taken his life. Again, he was such a fun character and Jan Watsons writing was a delight to read. I received my review copy from The Book Club Network, Inc. (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

All of Jan Watson's books are in my home library, and all were able to draw the reader in and keep them turning pages. "Buttermilk Sky" simply was not nearly as good as the rest of the series, and did not hold my attention as the her other books did.

Jan Watson in her new book Buttermilk Sky published by Tyndale House Publishers introduces us to Mazy Pelfrey.

From the back cover: Weary of the expectations imposed on her by her strict upbringing, eighteen-year-old Mazy Pelfrey prepares to leave her home in the Kentucky mountains for the genteel city of Lexington, where shell attend secretarial school. She knows her life is about to changeand only for the better. Everything will be blue skies from now on.

But business school is harder than she thought it would be and the big city not as friendly, until she meets a charming young man from a wealthy family, Loyal Chambers. When Loyal sets his sights on her, Mazy begins to see that everything shed ever wished to have is right before her eyes. The only hindrance to her budding romance is a former beau, Chanis Clay, the young sheriff she thought shed left firmly behind.

Danger rumbles like thunder on a high mountain ridge when Mazys cosseted past collides with her clouded future and forces her to come to terms with what she really wants.

They say the grass is always greener on the other side. Mazy decides the life she has at home is way too constricting for her and sets off to learn business. However it isnt quite what she expected until she meets Loyal and thinks she fell in love. However she did leave the boy at home behind, or so she thought, because Chanis comes after her. Now what is she to do? Ms. Cote has given us a very exciting story filled with high drama. She has also given us plenty to think about: the struggles of growing up, dangers of romance, dealing with peer pressure and coming into your own and how God has to work through individual problems so that each can heal and move into destiny. Great stuff. I am so looking forward to more from this very talented author.

"Mazy tilted her umbrella against the wind. "I predict buttermilk skies tomorrow." "That makes no sense, Mazy. You can't drink the sky." "My mother used to say that - it means the clouds are fluffy and break up easily, like creamy buttermilk."' ( pg. 129 )

Jan Watson has a gift for writing - a gift that flows onto the pages of her books and inspires her readers. The first time I read a book by Jan Watson { Troublesome Creek } I was blown away by the depth, emotion, and character of her writing. She instantly became a favorite author of mine. Jan Watson once again blew me away with Buttermilk Sky. Her writing seems to draw the reader into her world of the Kentucky mountains making you feel like you're a part of them, as if your heart beats as one. The characters in this book are vibrant and full of life - they are portrayed in a way that makes you feel like you're right there by their side experiencing their ups and downs, the happy moments and the sad. The humor is charming and will keep you smiling throughout the pages.

Mazy is somewhat naiive as she leaves her beloved mountains and attends secretarial school in Lexington. She struggles with staying because of the diffculties of her classes and she takes into consideration that maybe she isn't cut out to be a secretary. She has thought it through and is just about to give up and head home when Loyal Chambers walks into her life and changes everything. . .

Loyal Chamber is everything a girl could want: charming, handsome, wealthy, entertaining. And he seems to fit the bill of what Mazy wants in a man. With a little motivation from Loyal, Mazy is back on track in school and ready for some changes in her "simple" life.

But then dear, sweet, kind Chanis shows up in Lexington expressing his love and adoration to Mazy. Talk about bad timing! Mazy has been slowly pulling away from her former beau and has decided she doesn't want his attention anymore. She has told herself that Chanis just isn't what she wants. Poor Mazy, she is beside herself with decisions that need to be made. She knows what she wants, but her head and her heart aren't matching up - what is a mountain girl to do. . .

Buttermilk Sky has my vote - it's an impressive and enjoyable book. Jan Watson fills the pages with love, encouragement, wisdom, and a little bit of suspense. I truly appreciate and applaud the talent of Jan's writing and imagination - she does not disappoint!
