Vocabulary-building is emphasized through contextual exercises as well as a lesson dealing with word meanings. Word-bank, crossword, fill-in-the-blank, and other exercises are included, helping children gain familiarity with how words and sentences are constructed. Test sheets are included at the back of the book. Teacher-Parent help is required. This second edition features updated fonts and other minor aesthetic changes; two-tone pages don't distract from the content. 122 pages, softcover. 6th Grade. 2nd Edition.

Great Program!May 9, 2014In the GardenAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I truly appreciate finding this program. The wordlists are fantastic; the exercises are useful (not busywork). I appreciate the focus on roots, prefixes, and suffixes as well. My son is able to use this program independently (except for the spelling tests), which we both appreciate. Quick, effective, powerful. We'll be sticking with this program for all our children.

Regarding the previous reviewers comments about "weird wordlists," I don't think the words are unusual at all. Many of them are words kids will see in future reading unless they don't read any classics. For example, "Adieu" is found in Shakespeare's works and "Jonquil" in Willa Cather's (My Antonia). Honestly, my son's first encounter with the word "quay" was when he was six reading a Thomas the Train book, and "deathbed" is found in numerous dictionaries as one word.
Homeschool mom to 7St Louis MoAge: 25-34Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Weird wordlistsNovember 7, 2013Homeschool mom to 7St Louis MoAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 2I have used many Christian Liberty Press books over the past 7 years of homeschooling. I like their economical pricing and no frills approach to education. However I am really not impressed with this spelling book. It is the first time I have used this company's spelling curriculum. The word list selections seem incredibly odd. Words that sixth graders will never use and probably never even read even in the oldest classics. Some examples...jonquil, valise, quay, yeoman, adieu, pert, wurst, caliper, earthbound(that one couldn't be found as one word in ANY dictionary!!). So anyway, if your child learns these words they may win some "spelling bee of obscur words" but they will more likely get sick of looking up weird words and trying to memorize the spelling of words they have never heard used.
I will be using ABeka spelling again next year!!
