Author and mom Mary DeMuth knows what it’s like to embark on a maiden voyage into unchartered territory. Though she wasn’t raised in a Christian home, she wanted something different for her own children. She dreamed of a loving home with Christ as head. Since she had no role models in her upbringing, she calls the task pioneer parenting.
With passion and skill, Mary weaves for readers a picture of her haunted past. A child of divorce and survivor of sexual assaults from neighborhood boys, she found healing through the grace of God. Instead of being bitter, she’s learned to forgive and forge a new path for her family. The book is divided into three parts: Healing for the Past, God is With You Today, and Hope for the Future.
The author offers her own life as an example and gives modern pioneer parents a vision for success. She concludes with helpful study questions for each chapter which are useful for personal reflection or groups.
“Be encouraged,” she says. “The Parent of all people walks the road before you…God cuts away the sticker bushes that impede our path. He tell us where to step.” I highly recommend this book for any parent unsure about the monumental task of raising children who love God. Like a cup of cold water, DeMuth’s book refreshes the soul of weary parents with deep faith and hope. – Heather Ivester, Christian Book Previews.com

Author/Artist Review

Author: Mary E DeMuth
Located in: France
Submitted: December 22, 2005

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm the wife of a church planter. Along with our three children and two other families, we are planting a church in France. We've lived here over a year. I graduated with a degree in English in 1989 and started writing in the early 90's. I wrote a newsletter, edited other newsletters, and then started freelancing. I was a newspaper columnist for two years in Dallas before moving to France. I've had a few books published: Ordinary Mom, Extraordinary God (Harvest House, 2005) Sister Freaks (Time Warner, contributing author, 2005) Watching the Tree Limbs (NavPress, releases March 2006) I enjoy gardening, drawing, leading worship, reading to my children, cooking, and being outside.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to give parents who didn't want to duplicate the home they were raised in hope. By God's grace and intervention, pioneer parents CAN rise above a difficult upbringing and parent differently.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Encouragement. There are many parents floundering today because they didn't have a positive example of parenting growing up. They live with a titanic fear that they'll duplicate the home they were raised in. They can't relate to parenting experts who grew up in stable, Christ-loving homes. I wrote this book because I needed to read it (but I couldn't find it anywhere). One mom summed it up well. She told me, "I know what I don't want to do as a parent. The problem is I don't know what I DO want to do." This book addresses that in a healing, yet practical way.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I'll jump on the Donald Miller bandwagon here. In an interview with The Wittenburg Door, Miller said something that startled and fascinated me: "My style of writing just isn't so much self-help kind of stuff. It's going to offend some people because it's raw, real and it's scary because there is stuff in there that I don't feel comfortable being that vulnerable about but there it is. A lot of books that come out of Christian publishing companies read like press releases." Miller, along with Anne Lamott, have helped me to understand the beauty and redemption of daring to tell the truth, even at great personal cost.
