A fictional account of one family's first year of homeschooling, the author manages to pack many current homeschooling topics into this family's journey. Instigated to think about homeschooling because of a creation-evolution difference with a public-school teacher, as well as issues with a son who's slower to read than other students in the classroom, the Knight family is soon discussing and dealing with plenty of other issues. Woven into the storyline, the Knights have to think about--and make decisions about-- socialization, teaching multiple ages at once, deciding to have the mother stay home in order to fulfill the admonition to train up their children, evaluations, field trips, the importance of family over youth culture, how teaching honesty and ethics without the bible is useless, self-esteem in public schools, homeschooling conventions, and other every-day homeschooling situations. An afterward "The Fallacy of a Neutral Public School System" synthesizes the points made in the story. 220 pages, softcover.

    Tell us a little about yourself.  My husband, Gary, and I have been working in full-time ministry for almost 18 years. We have four daughters, whom we have homeschooled for 14 years. I wouldn't trade our years of homeschooling and ministering together for anything. God has truly blessed our family!

    What was your motivation behind this project?  Having gone through the public system ourselves, we have been challenged in many ways through our years of homeschooling. Gary and I have come to realize the vast difference between a secular education, and one that is founded on Scripture and presents a biblical worldview. I feel passionate about God's desire for Christian parents to train their children for Him, and I wanted to challenge parents as I have been challenged. I believe we need to be purposeful in how we train our children.

    What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope to encourage parents to prayerfully consider how their children are being educated and to realize that no education is neutral. A child's education, and the environment in which they are educated, will play a large role in shaping their worldview - whether biblical or unbiblical. It is also my desire to help others understand what homeschooling is about, and to encourage homeschooling families in the spiritual mentorship of their children. If I accomplish that, I will have accomplished much.

    How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  It was a tremendous blessing to me as I worked through many of the issues we faced during our homeschool journey through the lives of my fictional characters. I am even more excited about the sequel to "Bringing Them Home" which will follow the Knights through the teen years and courtship. "As For Me and My House" reflects our current journey, one which has led us counter to our culture as we seek to honor God as a family.
