Award-winning novelist Keli Gwyn is a California native who lives in a Gold Rush-era town at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. Her stories transport readers to the 1800s, where she brings historic towns to life, peoples them with colorful characters, and adds a hint of humor. She fuels her creativity with Taco Bell® and sweet tea. When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two skittish kitties.
“With witty dialogue, charming characters, and an attention to historical detail that will make you feel you’re living in frontier California, you’ll love every moment you spend in El Dorado, with spunky, resourceful Elenora Watkins and determined, debonair Miles Rutledge. Keli Gwyn’s debut historical romance is a winner!”
—Erica Vetsch author of A Bride’s Portrait of Dodge City, Kansas
“Keli Gwyn brings old California alive with a story that’s filled with faith, hope, and love. When a willful widow matches wits with a competitive shopkeeper you just know there will be fireworks. The battle of the sexes has never been so much fun. Highly recommended!”
—Margaret Brownley, Brides of Last Chance Ranch & New York Times bestselling author
“What a delightful debut! A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California, reminds me of the classic romantic comedies where two stubborn, independent people keep denying what everyone else knows is true: that they were meant for each other. I found myself eagerly turning the pages, wanting to see what was going to happen to Ellie and Miles next.”
—Amanda Cabot, author of Summer of Promise and Christmas Roses
Anyone who loves historical romances will enjoy this story.
Julie GravesOklahomaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5July 27, 2013Julie GravesOklahomaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleElenora Watkins and her daughter are headed for a brand new life in El Dorado, California when their stage is stopped by a bandit. Knowing that her prayers have not been answered lately Elenora decides that she will have to take care of the situation for herself as always.
Upon arrival in El Dorado Elenora's plans quickly fall apart when mercantile owner Miles Rutledge refuses to take her on as a partner in his store. Elenora, not to be daunted decides to open a store of her own instead. Opening her mercantile right across the street from Miles', Elenora is determined to prove to him and to the other men in town that she can run a business just as well as any man.
With Miles' mother taking care of Tildy, Elenora's daughter, and much of the women in town excited about the new products that Elenora brings into her mercantile a battle of the sexes soon ensues between Miles and Elenora.
Miles is determined to never let another strong-willed woman enter his life but slowly Elenora begins to touch his heart. Elenora wants to be able to provide for herself and Tildy and to be treated as an equal partner in the mercantile business. Will these two ever be able to see eye to eye?
I loved this story! There were several parts that made me laugh out loud. The interchanges between Elenora and Miles had sparks flying. From the opening pages with the stagecoach robber to the satisfying ending A BRIDE OPENS SHOP IN EL DORADO, CALIFORNIA kept me entertained throughout. This is definitely going on my favorites shelf!

KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful Romantic ComedySeptember 10, 2012KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Witty and charming and so much fun! The kind of read you chuckle the whole way through. I could totally see this on the big screen as a romantic comedy. Snappy dialogue -- the whole competition between Miles and Elenora is just a hoot. They're both so stubborn!!! I'd have to say that Elenora came out on top though -- she has such ingenuous marketing strategies! Poor Miles didn't stand a chance.
Then there's Elenora's daughter, Tildy. I love the warmth and humour a child can bring to a story and Tildy has both in spades along with enough spunk to keep her mother on her toes. And it isn't long before the little girl has Miles wrapped around her pinky finger. Their special friendship is another highlight of the book.
Secondary characters fill out a quirky town and contribute to meddlesome matchmaking which raises the stakes on both an emotional and comedic level.
An intricate plot filled with quite a few surprises kept me eagerly turning pages right to the end. A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California is a wonderful debut novel and I look forward to reading more of Gwyn's books in the years to come.
Sarah SundinAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A delightful debut!August 30, 2012Sarah SundinAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California deftly balances romance, humor, and a thoughtful message. Keli Gwyn has a marvelous knack for dialogue, banter, and humor. But I was even more struck by the message of not letting pride destroy relationships. Both Elenora and Miles long to best the other and prove themselves, but they each learn that being respectful and kind is far better. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to more from Keli Gwyn.

(4.5 glittering, gold stars!)August 22, 2012JesuSavesCanadaAge: Under 18Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4First, my, what a cover! Gorge-ous! The back of it makes me want to join these characters in El Dorado.
A Bride Opens Shop was a pleasure to read. Gwyn has crafted interesting characters and has included sweetness and fun in the story. Miles and Elenora's struggle with pride- and their pasts- was realistic and the story has a ending that made me sigh.
In addition, not only is this book carefully penned, it also smoothly unfolds with humour (get ready to laugh at least once!), charming romance, a good storyline and truths that will have readers nodding right along.
But let me warn you, there's a special little girl to look out for because she will steal your heart!
Tildy! Oh Lord, I simply LOVE her! If only to 'see' her once more, I'd pick this book up again and again! (I also enjoyed the affections given to her by Miles and Elenora).
Simply put: Delightful. From beginning till end.
This is my honest review. Thanks to the author for a copy of the book.
