When Melaia, a young priestess, witnesses the gruesome murder of a stranger in the temple courtyard, age-old legends recited in song suddenly come to life. She discovers wings on the stranger, and the murderer takes the shape of both a hawk and a man.
Angels. Shape-shifters. Myths and storiesuntil now.
Melaia finds herself in the middle of a blood feud between two immortal brothers who destroyed the stairway to heaven, stranding angels in the earthly realm. When Melaia becomes a target, she finds refuge with a band of angels attempting to restore the stairway. But the restoration is impossible without settling an ancient debtthe "breath of angel, blood of man," a payment that involves Melaias heart, soul, and destiny.
"Karyn Henley spins a lyrical young-adult tale of mythical and legendary beings, of reimagined angels and terrifying malevolents, in a small kingdom where the worlds fate rests on a young priestesss shoulders."
Kathy Tyers, author of Shivering World and the Firebird series
"Karyn Henleys novel starts with a jolt, grabs the reader by the collar, and doesnt slow down one minute. This author infuses her text with imagery, suspense, and a cast that will appeal to all ages. In addition, it has a feeling that I can only describe as "folklorish," with all the best elements that come with thatmusic, magic, and mystery. I think its destined to become a classic."
Kathi Appelt, author of The Underneath, National Book Award finalist, Newbery Honor Book, PEN USA Award
"This lusciously written fantasy has it all: epic battles, earthbound angels, immortal humans, and a bright, engaging heroine. Henleys young priestessturned-warrior is forced to put her past together like a jigsaw puzzle with pieces so sharp they cut. Her story is nearly impossible to forget, so readers will be eager for more!"

I didn't expect this book to be as good as it was, being that I'm in my mid-20s reading a young adult fiction. However, this kept my attention throughout, and made me want to buy the next book in the series. It isn't cheesy, as some fantasy can be. It isn't nauseating, as some romance can be. The adventure is exciting, as you learn new facets of their world with every turn of the page. A very entertaining read.
If you are wondering as to whether the content is Christian appropriate, I think so. The main character is a priestess to the "Most High" and is a moral girl. Not much Christian theme presents itself in the book, but it is a fantasy book, meant to entertain.
I found it rather clever, and highly recommend it.

A cloaked stranger enters the temple courtyard and before the young priestess, Sontress Melaia, could properly welcome the stranger he is attacked by a shape-shifter, hawk and man. Melaia desperately beats the hawk with a stick to get it away from the stranger. The hawk takes off in a cloud of smoke. But to no avail the stranger had been killed and Melaia watched as his spirit left his body to disappear into the cracks of the courtyard floor. When she attempts to remove the strangers cloak, in order to prepare his body, Melaia is shocked to find a bloodied set of wings. It appears the stranger was an ANGEL.
This is where the story gets even more intriguing. A handsome Envoy Trevin, dispatched by their King, comes to the temple and is given a very rare harp along with the Songstress Melaia as a gift to their King. It appears she is taken from her only home and has become nothing more than chattel for her King. As she is about to be presented to the King the story reveals a blood feud that is actually between two brothers and Melaia seems to be in the very center of the battle. She escapes and finds a safe haven among a band of angels. This is where the real TRUTH is revealed, and an ancient dept is to be paid, the “breath of angel, blood of man,â€a payment that involves Melaia’s heart, soul, and destiny.
This book has really peaked my interest into Angels and the different spheres of Angels.
I highly recommend this Christian Young Adult Fantasy.
I rated this book a 4 out of 5. Only because it was a little out of my genre. No fault of the author.

The night Melaia, a sixteen-year-old priestess, witnesses a murder in the temple courtyard, she finds out that the stories of angels and shape-shifters aren’t myths. They’re real. A message found in the murdered man’s hand is only the beginning: “Now is payment due in fullâ€.
Sent to serve a king in a distant land, Melaia thought she could trust Trevin, the young kingsman guarding her, only to discover later that his motive the entire time was to betray her later. Then she discovers a shocking secret about the events surrounding her birth, and it becomes her task to find the three k… harps to restore the stairway to heaven, allowing angels stranded in the earthly realm to return. Working against those trying to stop the stairway from being restored, Melaia must fulfill the ancient debt- breath of angel, blood of man- which only she is able to do.
From the description, I wasn’t really sure I would like this book, and it took me the first couple of chapters to really get into it, but then I just couldn’t put it down! I am really glad I chose this book to review, because I very, very much enjoyed it. This is my first Karyn Henley book, and I’m looking forward to reading others by her! I would definitely recommend this book.
I received this book free from the publisher in return for an honest review. My own truthful opinion is expressed here! ïŠ

Breath of Angel by Karyn Henley was an interesting mix of angels and humans, shape shifters and sylvans. This book grabs you right away and doesn’t let go. It was highly suspenseful and intriging. After witnessing a murder, the main character, Malaia, is pulled from her safe little bubble of teaching into a world where two immortal brothers are fighting after an incedent with a tree and some angels. The Sairway to Heaven was destroyed and Malaia is the only one who can restore it.
This book was an interesting read. I couln’t put it down. I’m ordering the next one right away.

This book is excellent. I wasn't expecting it to be as suspenceful as it was. The book is about a girl who must find out who she really is and fulfill her destiny. The characters are very lovely. Karyn Henley has a true treasure with this book. I can't wait to read the second one. Highly recommend it!
