Addiction is a rapidly growing problem among Christians and nonChristians alike. Even socially acceptable behaviors, such as shopping, eating, working, playing, and exercising, can quietly take over. Clinical psychologist David Hawkins breaks the silence with this enlightening exposé of the addictions that control people every day. Its loaded with practical information that will help readers...
- recognize and talk about addiction in their own life or family
- understand how people become addicted and what can happen when they do
- break the addictive cycle of thoughts and behaviors
- create a healthier lifestyle based on scriptural principles
- build a community of support
Virtually everyone is addicted to something or affected by a loved one who is. Many people who appear to live freely are secretly controlled by their compulsion. Breaking Everyday Addictions provides the tools they need to allow the healing power of Christ to permeate their lives.
Amydeanne5 Stars Out Of 5June 4, 2009AmydeanneThis book made me double take and re-think a lot of things lately (like my coffee addiction.. yes, I admit it.. Im addicted and get darn grumpy if i dont get my coffee lol..) laughing aside, I appreciate Dr. Hawkins book because it really makes us dig deep in our life all of us are prone to addictions and no one is immune. It goes on to discuss how familys can help and how families hinder addictions (even though they may think theyre helping!) It discusses those issues we all have dealt with as women (ie. Barbie Doll Syndrome - ya know being the perfect size 6.. or 0 these days). But it also covers more of todays issues like video games, internet surfing (gulp), chat rooms, cell phones, blogging, and internet addiction disorderThe bottom line that Dr. Hawkins points out is that Besides taking us away from ourselves, addictions take us away from God. He points out biblical issues that Jesus knows the folly of chasing after riches.(see Matthew 6:21). I love how he uses practical and straightforward advice, as well as Gods word and wisdom to help us through our issues. So if youre looking for some self improvement and want to deal with your own addictions (yes, even the coffee..) or know of someone in your family that needs help, this is a great place to begin and end.Am I changed after reading this book? I think this book has made me aware of some things I hadnt thought about (or denied to acknowledge out loud), so yes. I am hoping to change some of my addictions.. to put my life back in focus. It reminds me that Im still prone to past attractions and that I need to keep myself recovering as opposed to believing I can touch the stove and not get burnt
Patricia Chadwick5 Stars Out Of 5February 11, 2009Patricia ChadwickIn my opinion, Dr. David Hawkins writes terrific self-help books and Breaking Everyday Addictions is a wonderful addition to his other titles. Hawkins has a knack for laying out his information in an inviting way. The author really made you think about everyday things that might become addictions in your life, such as watching TV, answering emails, etc. According to Hawkins, anything that controls you can become a source of destruction in your life. Hawkins not only helps you see addictions, but outlines a plans to deal with them. This is a very enlightening book and should be shared with others.
John C. Gyorki5 Stars Out Of 5December 10, 2008John C. GyorkiI heard Dr David Hawkins speak on a radio broadcast and was immediately intrigued by the subject. When I received the book and started to read it, I could not put it down. The information is laid out in an understandable way. I ended up buying 5 more copies for friends of mine. Excellent book! John
