Product Description

Do you love food? Who doesn't really? Eating is a necessary activity, but in His overwhelming abundance, God has blessed us with thousands of ways to satisfy our hunger--ripe mangoes, chicken cacciatore, crusty bread and pungent cheese, a warm and smoky pinot noir--the world is filled with creative and delicious opportunities to enjoy. And one of the best ways to enjoy this abundance is with the people we love and cherish, gathered around the table, receiving nourishment from the food and from each other.
Author and speaker Shauna Niequist believes in the power of food and community as well, and in her latest collection of stories, Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table, she shares from her heart and her kitchen. With Shauna, you'll uncover why food is so important for our bodies and our souls, and how unbalance in one area of life can lead to unbalance in others. You'll explore the themes of feasting and fasting, celebration and mourning, brokenness and healing through stories and hand-picked recipes. Bread & Wine also includes a discussion guide for a four week book/cooking club, and tips from Shauna on entertaining with sample menus. As you read, you'll discover more of the sacred in your everyday, as you slow down and enjoy what happens around the table.

Publisher's Description

Bread and Wine is a collection of essays about family relationships, friendships, and the meals that bring us together. Written by well-loved writer and blogger, Shauna Niequist, this is a funny, honest, and vulnerable spiritual memoir about our life around the table---the celebrations, traditions, and experiences that we share, and the ways God teaches and nourishes us as we nourish the people around us.

Author Bio

Shauna Niequist is the author of Bread & Wine, Cold Tangerines and Bittersweet. Shauna grew up in Barrington, Illinois, and then studied English and French literature at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. As an author and blogger, Shauna writes about the beautiful and broken moments of everyday life---friendship, family, faith, food, marriage, love, babies, books, celebration, heartache, and all the other things that shape us, delight us, and reveal to us the heart of God. Shauna is married to Aaron, who is a pianist and songwriter. Aaron is a worship leader at Willow Creek and is recording a project called A New Liturgy. Aaron and Shauna live outside Chicago with their sons, Henry and Mac.

Editorial Reviews

Pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of wine, and enjoy the friendship and hospitality found around Niequist’s table. The author of Cold Tangerines and Bittersweet serves up portions of friendship, family, and faith, with sides of humor, insight, and favorite recipes, for a satisfying read that can double as a group study. (A discussion guide and recommended readings are tucked in the back of the book, with recipes and a sample menu for book/cooking clubs.) Niequist writes with vulnerability and honesty that make the reader hunger to be one of the friends and family members who grace her table. Struggles with getting pregnant, juggling family and career, and making time for deep friendships are among the life events discussed against the backdrop of meals. Cooking enthusiasts, whether they are experienced or are novices, will enjoy the talk about food and will want to try the recipes featured at the end of each chapter. Yet while recipes for bacon-wrapped dates and dark chocolate sea-salted butter toffee sound yummy, the emphasis is more on spiritual nourishment and how God feeds hungry souls through relationships.
