From the Back Cover: She never imagined securing her future would require delving into the past.
The year is 1838, and seventeen-year-old Julia Ellistons position has never been more fragile. Orphaned and unmarried in a time when women are legal property of their fathers, husbands, and guardians, she finds herself at the mercy of an anonymous guardian who plans to establish her as a servant in far-off Scotland.

It is not easy writing a story in the style of a Gothic romance. I can assure you that Ms. Dotta has done an exceptional job. She has combined all the elements: A recently orphaned girl with secrets about her mothers death, an unknown guardian who wants nothing to do with her, a childhood love who spurns her, a dark and mysterious man, an ancient house, and a group of people all with hidden motives and secrets of their own. There is a lot going on in this book, scheming manipulations, incredible deceit and really nasty people as well as really good people. Born Of Persuasion is also a romance that can only be found in Victorian London. Jessica Dotta knows how to weave a captivating story with wonderful characters that breathe. I am so looking forward to the third and concluding book in this series.

In this time period, women were seen as property to the closest male relative and Julia is no different. When her father dies, she becomes the legal property of an unknown guardian who wants to send her to Scotland to be used in the service of a bedridden widow. The only way out for Julia is marriage and unfortunately for her, her guardian refuses her to marry the man she loves. Instead, Julia is offered to be introduced to society by a titled man and Julia starts to believe that this arrangement will open new doors for her. However, she soon learns that deception lurks around the corner as she uncovers the truth about her mothers past and she is thrust into danger caused by Scotlands two most powerful men. What will Julias fate be and what does her mothers past have to do with her future? I found this book to be full of twists and turns and I loved how the book was written as if Julia herself were telling the story.
Sandy5 Stars Out Of 5lovedAugust 25, 2014SandyI 'loved' this book- not your same old same old I know where this is going story. And it was so well written that I 'winked' at some of the parts that would usually be 'offensive'. This is not a light read though and is written in an 'older' style evocative of a time when books were more complicated and people had time to read a meaty book. If you're looking for something different but good- try this
PMayesRaton, NMAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Historical romance with lots of twists and turnsAugust 9, 2014PMayesRaton, NMAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I just finished reading Born of Persuasion and cannot wait to read the 2nd book! Set in England in 1838, Julia finds herself without parents and at the mercy of an unknown guardian. Her life is not her own yet she struggles to have some control over her fate.
Julia, who professes to be an atheist, discovers that Edward, to whom she was secretly betrothed, has become a vicar. Feeling that marriage to Edward is out of the question, she allows herself to be courted by a very mysterious bachelor, Mr. Macy.
Is the man who appears to be the good guy really the bad guy? What about the man who is made out to be the bad guy? Is he really Julias protector after all? Who knows? The good news is that the book isnt predictable. The bad news is that you still wont know after reading Born of Persuasion because the book ends rather abruptly. The author seems to have plotted to get you to read the rest of the series. That works for me. I will definitely be reading Mark of Distinction.
