What a wonderful book for all ages, elementary up through high school! The maps are very clear and easy to read, and they outline very important history lessons from our past and present as a nation (there is even a map of Operation Iraqi Freedom!) We are using this book as part of a "U.S. Politics & Government -- What Our Forefathers Intended" unit this election season, and I am thrilled to have found it. It can be a stand-alone geography curriculum, or an aid to a state or U.S. history, or even a 20th Century History class. I strongly recommend this book. When you purchase the book, a CD-Rom with all the reproducible maps is included in the back to make life simple. It also has pre-written teacher lessons for each map in the front. What a treasure!
The Blackline Maps of American History by Terri Johnson have been so helpful to me, as a teacher in our home education program! The blank maps have provided a great way for us to learn more than we would have, otherwise. Good geography materials and maps is such a valuable tool when studying history. We can draw on the copies and add much, because the maps are large enough to give us room to do that. We've used them to help us learn the U.S. state capitals. We've used them to help us in learning, hands on, about the Civil War, as well as early American history, some of which I cannot find good, blank maps for! I am so glad for Terri's suggestions in the beginning of this book. And she adds much-needed, helpful information to these maps! This saves me time. I hope you will get a copy of this book, because you will find it will add much to your American history studies! Am so glad she has included so many recent war-time maps.
This is truly an amazing resource. The sky is the limit as to how you can choose to utilize this wonderful tool. It covers periods in history from the Vikings to Operation Iraqi Freedom. It encompasses American and World history in one resource! We just started using this resource and I am so excited to have it! As we studied the American Revolution, I searched the Internet for an appropriate map of Massachusetts to assist us with something as simple as the location of Lexington and that was a chore to find. Also, after reading a wonderful book on the Revolution, that detailed the battles fought, it has been a treat to review Terri's map, with the locations of the major battles. It added so much to my comprehension of the localities of the battles and the price paid by the colonies, rather than just focusing on the more popular battles in and around Massachusetts. The book is set up to be useful to students of all ages, including adults like me! It will be difficult to find another resource that is so easy to use, and that causes you to be incredibly excited about including map work in your studies. Even if you do not have students you are schooling, you will enjoy this resource as you deepen your understanding of major events that shaped the nations from 1000AD to the present.
This book compliments any American History study or can be used as a study by itself. We used it along with Sonlight and have turned to it for answers to questions that come up during other lessons as well. The maps are clear and easy to use. Depending on the age of the student I can give them a blank and have them use other resources to fill in certain names, or I can give them a blank and a filled in map (both are in this collection) and have them copy, or I can give them a filled in map to color. The book includes: Lesson plans, 31 Historical Maps, 31 Unlabeled Maps, 50 State Maps, an 11 X 17 Map, as well as instructions and ideas for use. It covers everything from the Vikings to the War in Iraq! I love this book! It covers all the mjor wars and the different battles fought during those wars, the details are amazing and I have never seen a set put together like this. There are maps marking each phase of the Battle of Bunker Hill as well as battle sites in Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom and everything in between. I think they did an excellent job with the maps highlighting the event of 9/11. You would be thankful if you add this resource to your library.
We use this book for everything! Not only history but also for geography, weather and climate studies, state studies, planning road trips, following the news ... everything! I just make copies of the pages on my copier and the boys fill in whatever information we're studying that day. Worth every penny, ten times over!
