Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Like my childhood hero, Peter Pan, who never wanted to grow up, I try to carry a little fairy dust with me at all times as a reminder to view life through a child's eyes. A midlife freelancer who still believes she can fly—via my retro Schwinn bicycle (complete with handlebar streamers and ringing bell!)—my life experiences as an elementary school teacher, dance team coach, performing arts director, evangelist, and entertainer, all serve me well in my writing career today. I took the plunge to begin this new chapter in my life when I attended the 2006 Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference where I won First Place in Poetry. Since then my poems and inspirational articles have been published in Ideals, Clubhouse, Clubhouse Jr., Guidepost Books, Mature Living, Today’s Christian Woman, Marriage Partnership, Writer's Journal, Christian Communicator, OC (Oncourse), War Cry, and the American Legion Magazine. I was named the 2012, 2011, and 2009 ACW “Writer of the Year” and won both first and second place in the 2011 Athanatos Christian Poetry Contest. Bink and Slinky’s Ark Adventure is my debut picture book.

What was your motivation behind this project?  One Sunday morning during worship practice a friend nonchalantly said, “You know, it took a lot of perseverance for the snail to reach the ark.” Voila! Holy Spirit lightning struck … and Bink and Slinky were conceived.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  While there are many books written about Noah’s big boat and the worldwide flood, Bink and Slinky’s Ark Adventure stands alone in its perspective of this amazing event, as seen through the eyes of two of the smallest, slowest, and seemingly most-insignificant of all God’s creatures. Like Abraham and Sarah in search of the Promise Land, Bink and Slinky slime up their snail-sneakers to each put their only foot forward to hunt for something they’ve never seen, before something called the “Great Falling” begins. Racing the clock, they face wacky-weird creatures, “Oh-no!” obstacles, and their own doubts as they sing the fearless song of all snails. For parents and grandparents wanting a fresh read of a timeless story, Bink and Slinky’s Ark Adventure teaches youngsters the value of faith, fortitude, and obedience to pursue God’s unique call upon each of their lives. With vibrant word-pictures that sparkle in giggledillyicious rhyme, Bink and Slinky will have children worldwide singing along with them and begging, “Read it again, please!”

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Whether I’m stumbling over life’s potholes or splashing through its mud puddles, God laughs alongside me when I experience those special “ah-ha!” moments that reflect the truth of His abiding presence through it all. How appropriate then that from among all the stories the Lord has given me, Bink and Slinky’s Ark Adventure has turned out to be my debut picture book. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” And just as Bink and Slinky not only needed each other, but a slew of other helpful animals, to complete their quest, so God never intended for me to climb the mountain alone. Working on this project has given me a fresh, grateful, and humble appreciation for the personal cheerleaders He’s supplied along my life’s path.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  As a child I once overheard a miserly neighbor tell her granddaughter to stay away from me because I was nothing but trash. Since that fateful day I’ve endeavored to surround myself with people of excellence, like-minded troubadours who believe that mediocrity has no place in life’s vocabulary. From my high school band director, Doug Jordan, who challenged me to work harder than I ever thought possible—to firecracker teachers like Dennis “Doc” Hensley, head of Taylor University’s Professional Writing Program—and Christine Tangvald, who waggled around a cramped classroom to teach me how to lay out a children’s picture book, the Lord has been faithful to fill my cup again-and-again. In addition, the Highlights Foundation, as well as the network of excellent Christian Writer’s Conferences and their dedicated directors have been invaluable to me in the learning process. After mentoring with children’s book authors Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Michelle Medlock Adams, it was the serendipity of a “chance” meeting with gift-book/ children’s author Karen Moore that finally opened up the door to publication.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Standard Publishing and my book’s illustrator, Monica Gutierrez, have been wonderful to work with. They all worked hard to bring the story I saw in my mind’s eye to life.
