DaisyBakersfield, CAAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Makes Reformed doctrine understandable.June 19, 2013DaisyBakersfield, CAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleBible Doctrine for Older Children is based on the Heidelberg Confession and draws from the Reformed church's three forms of unity (Heidelberg, Canons of Dort, and Belgic Confession).
Bible Doctrine for Older Children is set up in ten chapters. Each chapter begins with vocabulary. Text follows and is interspersed with illustrations that make each doctrinal point understandable to a wide variety of ages. At the conclusion of each chapter, there is a suggested memorization section and several pages of short answer comprehension questions.
I used this with an 10yo and 13yo and we did the entire book orally. We finished Bible Doctrine for Older Children Book A & B in one school year, but we did it daily and into the summer. Better pacing for elementary/Jr high students would probably be to take one year for each book.
Late Elementary and early Junior High will need help and discussion to have good understanding. A high school student could very effectively complete this independently for a high school credit in Reformed doctrine, especially if combined with position essays.
I gave this 4/5 stars for the simple reason that the lay-out feels a bit cluttered and dated. It wasn't an issue for us since we did this orally but it might be a drawback for some students.
