Tired of plowing through a Bible passage, and not being exactly sure of what insight or message you got, or being bored, or, worse yet, being even more confused than when you began? Learn to Study the Bible has all the help you need to make your devotions and Bible studies worthwhile, informative, and exciting.

Author Andy Deane, a Calvary Chapel pastor, set out to turn a class of willing yet confused students into excited Bible readers. With the Lord’s help, he did it. This book grew out of that experience. Deane opens with a discussion about finding joy and treasure in the Bible, presenting the basics of all Bible study: observation, interpretation, and application. Then comes step-by-interesting-step instructions for each Bible study method. Since Deane encourages the use of a notebook with all schemes, he closes each section with an illustration of a notebook page for that particular system.

Prayer and repeated readings of the passage form an integral part of each technique. Many of the methods are so familiar you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself. Others are a bit more exotic, and will catch your attention. They range from that useful stand-by, The Daily Bread monthly publication, through studies of individual subjects like prayer or miracles. Following are samples of some other methods: Rethink and Restate, suggested for short passages, in which you write the passage in your own words; Six Questions to ask yourself about each passage you study; Verse-by-Verse Charting, using paraphrases and a standard form for a chart you prepare; Book Details; Book Characters; Messy Bible, with directions for color coding your Bible; Modern Issues, applying the Bible passage to today’s problems and interests; plus several just for younger students (and very useful for older ones, too), such as Funnel It ,where you draw a funnel and on successive layers describe the teachings of the passage. Deane wraps up all this information with suggestions for building a reference library and a few extra thoughts for continued Christian growth.

Learn to Study the Bible has interest and value for everyone, from you and me to the most advanced theological students and pastors. Church and Christian School teachers will find a lot of help in these pages. This book will truly guide you into “Studying to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:1). – Donna Eggett, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

I am always a little skeptical of methodological books, but I found that my apprehension was completely unfounded after reading Learn to Study the Bible. After reading and studying my Bible for almost 15 years, I must admit that I could use some fresh perspective in my approach. As a stay at home mom, my life is filled with distractions which includes scrambling to find QUIET time to spend with the Lord. When I do get time, I am thinking of the baby, dinner, and all the things I need to do. I read and then walk away, often forgetting what I just read. There are a few books out there on study methods, but really none like this. There are 40 really fun, easy methods to check out and use! The simple explanations and handwritten examples make it possible for anyone to apply these methods to their daily reading. It even offers opportunities to take your studies further with the more in depth methods. Grab a journal or notebook when you read God's Word, pick a study method, and you will be blessed at what the Holy Spirit shows you! Getting in the habit of WRITING down and digesting what you read will ensure you won't forget it when you walk away. The simple discipline of writing out what God shows me really cements His Truth in my mind. You will definitely find this book is a great tool to meditate upon His Word and dig into the treasures He has left for His children!

Many families who homeschool for religious reasons include Bible study as part of their core curriculum. Some complete homeschool curricula include Bible study, but a lot of us prefer to do even our homeschool Bible study directly from the Bible itself. This book by Andy Deane, who serves as an associate minister on the staff at Calvary Chapel Old Bridge in central New Jersey, is designed not only to encourage Bible study but also to help people learn how to study the Bible and to make Bible study interesting so that they will get more out of it. Following the introduction on the joy of Bible study, the first five chapters provide tips for profitable Bible study and give some general guidelines about determining what a passage says, what it means, and what it asks us to do. There follow forty more chapters with forty different Bible study methods. Andy says, The hundreds of hours spent researching and experimenting with these forty methods will enable you to find one or more that will fit your goals and begin enhancing your understanding of Gods Word today. Trying different methods will help one stay fresh in his approach to Gods Word, draw out spiritual truths from the Scriptures that he may have otherwise missed, and avoid the dryness that can sometimes creep into routines. Some of the chapters are basic study methods with simple ways for everyone to study the Word. Others are major study methods with time-tested approaches for those who want to go deeper. Still others are creative study methods that add variety to Bible study. There are chapters on studying specific kinds of passages, and even study methods suitable for younger students. The last two chapters have information on building a Bible reference library and some final thoughts. Of course, the principles found in this book would be beneficial for any private, individual Bible study, but I believe that they could well be used in homeschool Bible study also to give variety.

Wow has Andy shattered the cold stone ceiling of Bible study! No longer should the Bible remain mysterious and reserved for the theologians. Many Bible study methods morph into boring laborious monotony, but not this one. Learn to Study the Bible makes knowing the Bible adventurous, deeply personal, thought provoking and just plain fun. No matter where you open this book you will discover great new methods of digging into the treasure of Gods Word. Whether the chapter on Daily Devotions, the Rethink & Restate Method or Verse by Verse Charting, the next journey is more fun than the last one. Anyone wishing to cultivate the same passion for Gods Word that has transformed the author will love this book.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I was raised in a Christian home and accepted the Lord at an early age. As a college student, I attended New York University in Manhattan where I lived and worked in the shadow of the World Trade Center. On September 11th, 2001, My life was spared from death, and amidst the destruction that so quickly engulfed the city when terrorists attacked, my relationship with Jesus Christ was renewed and deepened as God saved my life. On that day, God taught this young college student a lesson about His sovereign power that changed the course of his life forever. Today, I serve as an associate pastor at Calvary Chapel Old Bridge in central New Jersey where I oversee the youth ministry. I was recently married to Shannon and we live in the central New Jersey area serving the Lord together.

What was your motivation behind this project?  This project came about after what I thought was going to be a fairly simple task of teaching a group of junior high students a few basic inductive Bible study principles that would help them to dig into the Bible. To my surprise, after forty minutes all I had to show for my effort was a room full of frustrated and confused teenagers. What a disaster! I quickly realized that the biggest mistakes I made were: 1) Trying to teach them a method of Bible study that was too complicated for them to grasp. 2) Presenting it to them as if it was the only way to study Scripture. I was determined to right this wrong, but first I needed to do a little research. So, I began to look for the perfect Bible study method - one that would open their young minds to the greatness of the Bible. A personal quest began to grow out of my utter failure. Every day I searched for new study methods that would unlock God's Word. I read over thirty books (many out of print) and visited countless websites looking for the best Bible study methods. None of the ones I found were perfect, but many of them had interesting points of view and seemed like they would be fun to try. So I did. That is when I began to realize that I was onto something more than I anticipated at the start. My search resulted in not one, but numerous inspiring and challenging Bible study methods suitable for any Christian, young or old, who desires to draw nearer to the Lord through studying His Word. In the end, I had compiled a list of forty different step-by-step Bible study methods. I tested each of them myself, improving upon some in order to make them a little more efficient and to the point. As I was doing the work, a desire to share my discoveries with others began growing in my heart. I wished that everyone could read the books and websites for themselves, but I knew that wasn't very realistic. So I did the next best thing. I decided to bring it all together in this one book.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My greatest desire is to equip and inspire God's people to dig into the Scriptures and begin comprehending and applying the richness of His Word into their daily lives. Bible study should be fun and not boring. I hope to help Christians avoid the rut that routine can sometimes bring by showing them 40 ways to study the Bible. I'm hoping the handwritten examples included with each of the forty methods will help readers learn them quickly.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  My personal love for studying the Scriptures was expanded as I discovered these Bible study methods. I never knew that there were so many ways to study the Scriptures. Having such a variety has helped me to maintain joy in my daily devotions.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  The theme verse for this book is Psalm 119:162, "I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure" (NKJV).
