This is NOT for 4th grade!
This is perfect when done in sequence in the series for the purpose of phonics mastery. That's IT! I've seen all the books, and how it works is this: ABC is for pre-school or Kindergarten. E1-2 is 1st grade lvl. E3-4 is 2nd grade reading lvl. So if you have 3 and 4, what you have is 2nd grade, the grade when phonics/reading and comprehension must be mastered before entering the 3rd grade. It never said it was for 4th grade, it's just a number for their books. E5-6 is 3rd grade lvl, and E7-8 is 4th grade lvl. They don't have beyond the code for those books, because reading comprehension should be good by then, those books focus on the larger words kids encounter in 3rd and 4th grades.

This is a good series for basic skills but far too simplistic to be considered 4th grade. I would say books 1 and 2 would be 1st grade (or an advanced K'er) and books 3 and 4 seem about right for 2nd grade (or an advanced 1st grader). My son liked the stories and the simple method for answering the comprehension questions but, really, MUCH more should be expected out of a 3rd/4th grade level book.

I really like this book and most importantly my son likes it. Stories ask for you answer the questions by smiley faces, but I make my son answer them in complete sentences. The lessons in between the stories are not hard, but he does know what all the words mean so he is getting little bit of vocabulary.
