I love the Amish country and reading about them. I especially love Beverly Lewis and her cookbook is as great as I expected. The notes/words of wisdom after most of the recipes, bring out a story in each recipe.
Beverly Lewis Amish Heritage Cook book is the best cookbook I have ever seen. As it goes into such detail of the Amish Heritage while sharing detailed instructions for over 200 different recipes that covers mostly everything from Seafood-filled mushrooms to Bread and butter pickles. It is easily understood and any average cook could understand the recipes and not go wrong. Most of the recipes, I personally have never heard of and I have tried five recipes on things I have never tried before and my family loves them as I didnâ€˜t mess up. The Amish cookbook, goes to show what the Amish cooks for their families, using modern day methods. The book shows the shortcuts that most cooks do, without taking from the recipes of the Amish.
One part that is especially nice in the book, is the personal page, that Beverly Lewis added in the front in memory of her grandmother, Ada Buchwalter 1886-1954. I believe that makes for good family memories, when a grandmother passes down her own life stories and recipes.
I am like other cooks, like to explore new recipes, and I love this cookbook. I love where it has the index that is easily used as well as the Contents. This cookbook fit our era as you can go to the store and buy anything that the recipes ask for. Most cookbooks for Amish Heritage, are not the kind of cookbooks that people can use in this era. I love this cookbook and I truly feel that every cook should have one in the personal library. No one can go wrong with this cookbook, and anyone who doesn't have one then they need to get one.
Along with recipes from Beverlys family her grandmother, mother, aunts, siblings and daughter Lewis called upon a plethora of talented cooks living in Amish communities. The result is a combination of cultural cookbook and family memorabilia. Lewis shares her remembrances of traditional recipes from her family in the Note from Bev section that occasionally follows a recipe, providing a selection of memories, serving suggestions, personal comments on flavour, and such.Each major section: Appetizers and Beverages, Breakfast Specialty Dishes, Breads, Salads and Salad Dressings and so on, opens with a quote from one of Lewis novels. These quotations are always taken from a food-related scene in which an item from the relevant category plays a part. Better still, Lewis fans will be thrilled to find that some of the intriguing foods described in the novels are given recipes in the cookbook. Whether its Old-Time Lemonade from The Betrayal, Cornmeal Mush from The Postcard, Cottage Cheese and Pepper Salad from The Covenant, or one of many others the opportunity to take a trip through the culinary landscape of Lewis novels is a unique treat.The Beverly Lewis Amish Heritage Cookbook draws heavily from modern Amish cooking practices rather than those youd think of in a book including heritage in its title. The majority of the entries do include some form of prepared short cut, and even those older recipes passed down through Beverlys family have been modified for modern cooks. Those mainly interested in from scratch recipes are likely to suffer from some disappointment. One of the most striking examples is the traditional sourdough friendship bread recipe that calls for a box of instant pudding. Some of the recipes call for regional ingredients those living outside of territories traditionally associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch may find themselves improvising and substituting.
This book was a gift for my granddaughter and she loves it..can"t wait to try the recipes! She loves the Amish novels and is fascinated with some of the names of their food like "shoefly pie" so we both are very pleased with the book.
