    Introduction

Many books are written on preaching every year, but not many of those books stand the test of time. Most of the books on preaching succeed in helping the reader understand theories on preaching, the history of preaching, or what the Bible teaches on preaching. Very few books on preaching are considered classics, and those that are combine what the Bible teaches on preaching, the history of preaching, and how to preach. Between Two Worlds: The Challenge of Preaching Today by John Stott is rightly considered a classic, a volume that has stood the test of time, because its author was a great preacher and statesman of evangelicalism for many years until his very recent death. This book demonstrates Stott's immense knowledge of preaching and his desire to equip preachers, so they can faithfully proclaim the Word of God in their contexts.

    Summary

In three hundred and forty pages, John Stott walks his readers through the history of preaching, objections to preaching, and theological foundations for preaching, preaching as Bridge-building, sermon preparation and being courageous and humble in preaching. The goal of Between Two Worlds is to address the "loss of confidence in the Word of God among preachers who no longer take the trouble to study the Word in depth and proclaim it without fear" (Stott, 7).

    Evaluation

Between Two Worlds along with Preaching and Preachers by Dr. Lloyd-Jones are two of my favorite books on preaching. Between Two Worlds excels at grounding its teaching in the Word of God and then equipping the preacher to know and proclaim the Word to faithfully the people of God. While no book on preaching can cover everything, Between Two Worlds accomplishes its purpose in addressing the "loss of confidence in the Word of God among preachers" (Stott, 7).

The greatest strength of this book is its emphasis on the Word of God, the Gospel of God and how to proclaim the Word to the people of God. Dr. Stott answers to objections to preaching should be emulated by other preachers as he speaks firmly, but plainly the truth of God's Word in love.

    Conclusion

Books on preaching come and go, but not many books in this genre stand the test of time and become classics. Between Two Worlds was written by Dr. John Stott, a seasoned Pastor and leader of evangelicalism, and is rightly considered a classic text on preaching. Between Two Worlds will help its readers to understand what the Bible teaches about preaching, and how to preach the Word to the people of God.

I first read Between Two Worlds as a teenager in high school, and it was formative for me. Having read this book numerous times over the year, I've always benefited from it and learned a great deal about how to better communicate the Word of God to the people of God. Between Two Worlds is a very helpful book on preaching that will help its readers to become better lovers and preachers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

What can I say about BTW? Stott 'gets it' when it comes to preaching! He understands the role of a preacher as a herald of the gospel who is called to bridge the gap with culture to be understandable. This is a must read for preachers in the west. The only drawback is that some of the cultural references are dated (time for a new edition?), but what an excellent book. I've read it twice, and will probably read it again every few years, its that valuable.

A great book on preaching in today's world. Stott gives some great arguments on why Biblical preaching is still valid in today's world. Knowing that God is at the "center" of all preaching. A great book that "delves" into the importance of putting God at the forefront of what we preach. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a better underdstanding of what it is to exhort God's word.

Stott's book is a CLASSIC among Classics in the world of preaching. It's a little long, but never exhausting!!! It's a comprehensive work to say the least. He deals with everything from a "Call To Study," "Preaching As Bridge Building," "Theological Foundations For Preaching," and "Preparing Sermons" just to name a few. However, the one thing that really seemed to hit me the hardest was in fact his very first chapter, "The Glory of Preaching: A Historical Sketch." In this chapter Stott walks you through the heritage by which you come to the pulpit. He paints a vivid picture of the long line of fellow preachers that seemingly stand with you as you preach the message they preached ... Jesus Christ - today. God used that chapter to encourage me in hammering home the truth that I really do come from a long line of brothers ... fellow workers ... preachers ... guys just like me, who wrestled with pressing issues in their day. It showed me that I dare not dishonor such a heritage. I owe it to God and to those before me to be as great of a man of God as I can be, and to carry on the heritage of great and effective preaching.
