Meet the Herdmans: six scraggly, unchurched "welfare kids," who lie, steal, and smoke cigars (even the girls!). When these terrors of the town show up at Sunday school and muscle their way into the annual Christmas pageant, chaos---and hilarity---ensue! When Jesus said, "Let the little children come," he didn't mean the Herdmans---did he? 81 pages, softcover from HarperCollins.
Hey! Unto you a child is born! The Herdmans are absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie and steal and smoke cigars (even the girls). They talk dirty, hit little kids, cuss their teachers, set fire to Fred Shoemaker's old broken-down toolhouse, and take the name of the Lord in vain. So no one is prepared when the Herdmans invade church one Sunday-and decide to take over the annual Christmas pageant.
None of them has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation -- the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating-- has a lot of people up in arms. But the actual pageant is full of surprises for everyone, starting with the Herdmans themselves.

It is a really good picture of how things tend to "be" within a Christian Church, with the assumption that everyone "knows" the Christmas story. I liked the message, the reminder of who Christ is, and the importance of being prepared to tell the story of Jesus, in a loving manner, even to the most difficult personalities. Christ was born and died for all of us, not just some of us.

I read this book many years ago and found it heart-warming and delightful. Last year I purchased several copies for my adult nieces and this year for my grand-nieces. It is what the birth of Jesus is all about. Not just pretty and expensive packages but how it is given - from the heart.

This is an excellent book! It works on so many different levels. Through relatable characters, this book teaches children about the birth of Christ without them realizing what they are learning . Christ came for all of us even the worst of us. Very entertaining.

This is an absolutely delightful
book. Call it a kid's book if you
want, but every adult who has ever
been a kid can remember a family of "Herdmans." This is a great book for young and old with a great Christian Christmas theme and lesson.
