Following on the heels of the successful book The Outsider, The Believer is Ann H. Gabhart's newest exploration of love and devotion in this quiet Shaker community.

Author Bio

Living just thirty miles from a restored Shaker village in Kentucky, Ann H. Gabhart has walked the same paths that her characters might have walked in generations past. Her thorough research provides a convincing and colorful backdrop for her Shaker novels. Gabhart is also the author of Orchard of Hope and Summer of Joy.

Publisher's Weekly

A Shaker romance sounds like a nonstarter idea for a novel, since the Shakers, a socially revolutionary religious sect, practiced celibacy. But therein lies the tension in this historical romance, Gabhart's second Shaker outing (after The Outsider). Raised by Shakers since the age of six, when he ran away from his river rat father, Ethan Boyd is a Believer—someone who has signed a covenant to join the Shakers. But he's thrown into emotional turmoil when Elizabeth Duncan and her two younger siblings, following the sudden death of their father, seek refuge in 1833 at Harmony Hill, the Shaker community in Kentucky where Ethan lives. Elizabeth is also escaping from a predatory landlord with designs on her. A number of supporting characters are well drawn, including Elizabeth's siblings Payton and Hannah and the kind Shaker, Issachar, Ethan's benefactor. Other characters are more like caricatures—Elizabeth's landlord is an Oilcan Harry, mustache-twirling kind of villain. On balance, the book rings with researched authenticity and will appeal to Amish romance fans. (Aug.) Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.

This review was written for The Believer, Shaker Series #2.
Elizabeth Duncan is at her wits end. With both her parents gone and an unsavory suiter waiting in the shadows, she feels she has no choice but to take her brother Payton and sister Hannah to the Shaker village at Harmony Hill. There they are taken in, fed and clothed and expected to behave in the Shaker way. But while Elizabeth and Hannah struggle with the strict rules and the Shaker way of life, Payton finds that he fits into the community very well.

Raised in the Shaker community from boyhood Ethan Boyd know that the young Elizabeth will be a distraction to him. As weeks go by the pair find that they have fallen in love, something strictly forbidden at Harmony Hill.

After reading the first book the outsider which I enjoyed, but I really wasn't sure I wanted to dive back into the Shaker world. One time was really enough for me, but the girls in my book club wanted to read it. Once I got into it I found that the story was quite good for the most part. I got through the book quite quickly. The character where engaging and well defined. The story itself was good quality and easy to follow.

There were a couple things I found delightful about this book. Hannah was charming. Try as she might she couldnt stop being the free spirit that God made her to be. She did her best to follow the strict rules that the shakers insisted that she follow, but in the end she could help but to be herself. Elizabeth and Ethan "committing" matrimony.

The description of the Shakers life and beliefs were interesting if in a lot of ways unbiblical. The fact that they pray the Eternal Father and one of their founders, a woman they call Mother Ann and they don't seem to acknowledge Jesus in any way. That they have appointed confessors for their sins, instead of confessing them to God. They fact that they dance and shake their sins off themselves. All contrary to biblical teaching.

The theme that I found in this book is to be who God made you to be. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in how to live your life for God.

All in all I found this to be a fairly good book and one that I would recommend.

Elizabeth Duncan has run out of options. With her last living parent gone, two siblings to care for, and no where to live, she turns to the last hope that remains. Remembering the Shaker village in the next county that her father told them stories about, she packs up her brother and sister and presents herself and siblings at Harmony Hill. Despite the strange beliefs that swirl around them, she is relieved that the Shakers provide a roof over their heads in exchange for the labor of their hands. Even though they are provided for, Elizabeth finds herself attracted to a young Believer named Ethan. He is beginning to see her as more than a sister, and Elizabeth fears she will be asked to leave the village in order to keep him from sin. Will she be able to leave her siblings behind forever? Or will Ethan bring himself to acknowledge the love growing in his heart?

This was quite the tender love story, despite the oxymoron of a Shaker romance. Ethan was quite naive to anything and everything in the world, but curious, just like every normal child who knows nothing of the outside. Having grown up in the Shaker village keeps him from experiencing life as he should have, and he is very childlike even as a young adult. A good story line and an entertaining plot. I enjoyed everything about this book, and I really fell in love with all of the well written characters. I give it six stars.

For many years I lived near the Shaker village the author describes in her novel. It was a peaceful place and I visited often. Studying the Shakers became a hobby of mine. I can say absolutely that the author's accuracy of details and the mindset of the Shakers is very impressive. Besides that, it is a delightful story and extremely well-written. I was hooked from the first sentence.
