Having read Deeanne Gist before I was interested in reading a contemporary piece from her and having it co authored with someone else into suspense was intriguing. I was a little disappointed. The concept was good but as I read constantly I pretty much had the who done it figured put early on. The intrigue between the lead characters was good and I did enjoy the confrontation with the detective. This book was beguiling to say the least. Beguled is a suspense/romance novel. These are the kind of books that I love! And this was no exception. When a lonely dogwalker, Rylee has an unfortunate contact with reporter, Logan Woods, a love story weaved with mystery has begun.Break-ins have been happening all through Charleston's wealthiest areas, and somehow they are all pointing right in the direction of Rylee. Logan works hard to scoop the story and beat the police at finding the criminal. So is his interest in Rylee simply to gain momentum in the story and pin it on her? Or is it a true romantic interest?I read this book quickly -- it was an easy read. This was the two authors, Deeanne Gist and J. Mark Bertrand's, first novel together. Through the first chapters, while setting up the plot of the story, I could tell it was from two different people writing. However, as the story went on and drew me into the book, you would have thought the authors had been writing together for years. This is a great book for those times when you just want to get lost in a story! You will find yourself "beguiling the long afternoon with a good book!"

I was given the opportunity to review my first Christian romantic suspense novel. This is a first time partnership from bestselling historical romance author Deeanne Gist and debut crime fiction writer J. Mark Bertrand. BEGUILED was so enjoyable, I cannot wait to read Mark's solo release, BACK ON MURDER, which is out this summer. I was drawn to this book because I enjoy a good mystery, and who doesn't want to read romance? This combination did not fail to deliver. The story centers around dog-walker-to-the-rich Rylee Monroe and reporter Logan Woods. A series of burglaries in Charleston -- most of whose victims are Rylee's clients -- suddenly puts Rylee right in the middle of an investigation as a suspect. Logan has high ambitions to write his first crime novel and these burglaries are a major part of his writings. Now, he just needs to find out whodunit. The more he gets to know Rylee, the more he's drawn to her, and they both seek out the truth together. There are several plot twists that keep the story from being too predictable. While not overtly preachy, I enjoyed the depth of Rylee's character in this Christian novel and appreciate how Logan's family of origin is grounded in a strong faith. I suggest you don't pick this book up unless you have enough time to finish; it's a page turner! I received this book free from Bethany House as part of their Blogger Review Program, and was not required to write a positive review.

It was fun to see Deeanne move out of historical fiction for a change of pace! The crime was well plotted on the part of her co-writer, J. Mark Bertrand. But my compliments end there. The frustration for me is that the characters lack any depth of faith AGAIN. They aren't anything different than the rest of the world. Even the rest of the characters don't see them that way and doubt their integrity. Also, the making out and lusty looks are shallow. I believe a great writer (Francine Rivers for example) can create a character of deep conviction and fully moral standing. This book isn't really any different than what the world is offering me. Bummer. I was so excited.
