Former FBI agent Rae Gabriella's new beginning almost becomes her final ending in Dee Henderson's new suspense novel, Before I Wake. After an undercover operation goes tragically awry, Rae accepts a job as a private detective with her former boyfriend, Bruce Chapel, in the town of Justice, Illinois.
Justice is usually a quiet Midwestern town, but a contract dispute between the union at the local tile plant and the management has the town on a razor's edge of violence. When a young Chicago reporter dies in her hotel room, Sheriff Nathan Justice is both relieved and uneasy about the coroner's report. As if that isn't enough to handle, his grandfather, Henry, likes to drive his sporty new car fast and refuses to tell the family where the money came from, making him doubly Nathan's problem.
The death of a second young woman with the same vague cause of death raises the fears of the police to a new level. The evidence points to natural causes, but the coincidence suggests murder.
When the reporter's parents request Rae's aid in determining who killed their daughter, Rae agrees, not realizing that she has made herself a target. Her investigation into what the reporter was researching leads to a third body and an illegal drug designer. But how is he getting the drugs to the victims? How long before his system is perfected enough to become the lawman's newest nightmare? How does Rae keep from becoming a victim?
While still an enjoyable read, Henderson's latest book doesn't maintain the tension that she's known for. In reaching for depth in her characters, which I felt she achieved, she left us with a couple of slow-moving stretches of dialogue. The investigative action felt more realistic than in many detective books because the whole community is suspect. She achieves the small town feel of the setting well.
While I enjoyed the book and look forward to the sequel, it seems less a sequel than a continuation. The ending offered no sense of closure. However, Henderson deals with some substantive questions about living godly and trusting God in an ungodly world which raise the spiritual value of the book from just another detective story to a thoughtful apologetic in a pretty good detective story. – Debbie W. I love Christian suspense novels. Dee Henderson has always shone through as one of my favorites and I have read most of her series. I decided to get "Before I Wake" and see how a "stand-alone" book of hers would be. I have to say that I was extremely disappointed in this book. At first what bothered me most is that the leading lady, Rae, seems comfortable with leading on two very nice men that were interested in her. That didn't quite line up with the values that Henderson usually portrays. The novel was suspenseful and would have made a wonderful whodunit, if it ever actually told you who done it. The book comes to a sudden end without you ever finding out who the culprit is. And it is supposedly a stand alone novel, with no hope of getting those questions answered. It leaves me wondering if it was originally intended to be the introduction to a series, but somehow that plan was aborted. It also leaves me feeling like I wasted too much time reading Before I Wake.

I really like Dee Henderson, but was very disappointed in this book. There were so many questions left unanswered and the whole plot of the book was completely unresolved. I would definitely not recommend this book to a friend. So disappointing.

Like all of Dee Henderson's stories this book was designed to captivate the audience right from the beginning and make it hard to put down. The story follows Rae Gabriella into town and dwells on her, her new partner, the town sheriff and the problems the town is facing. The story line stayed moving throughout the book but the ending was a little disappointing because it left too many unanswered questions.

My review has been sitting with the book for a while because I hated to go for only about 3 1/2 stars. Stringing along two guys? NOT. Who is the behind-the-scenes-evil-string-puller? A coward for sure. I am not sure I want to find out too much more about 'the rest of the story'. I paired up ... na, no sense spoiling it.

As in Before I Wake (and partly in Kidnapped / True Courage) I have an issue with gratuitous gore and violence. Having said that, I am glad the language is clean.

For the fun of it I read some of the reviews. Perhaps we have put Dee on a bit of a pedestal and want her to give us a perfect story every time. I think, once the O'Malley and the Courage series were done, it WAS time to move on?

I do hope for more good reads from Dee, but that hangs on whether the Lord puts further good story ideas in her head, right?
