This book arrived in my mailbox about two weeks ago and I was so excited that it had finally (after a delay with the publisher) arrived!! "Bedtime Prayers That End With a Hug" was created by Stephen Elkins and looked great in the previews from the publisher so I was eager to get a copy to share with my niece!

This is a really nicely bound hardback book with softly padded covers appropriate for a little persons book. Included in it are 52 entries with a Scripture, special thought, and prayer for bedtime reading with your child. The publisher recommends this book for 3-5 years old but I have been reading it with my almost 2 year old niece with good results, she loves the pictures and the readings are short enough that she will sit still and attentive while we read them. Although she may not understand everything I am reading I feel that it is important to be talking Scripture to little ones from the youngest ages- this book lets me do that. I know that in time she will grow into the book as a whole and I am really happy that this book is essentially a child's devotional book. I have never seen something geared for an age group that young and I had my doubts about how 'fluffy' the content might be but I have been pleasantly surprised by the depth of the writing. Topics covered in the book range from the first entry that intros the theme of 'The Lord is my Shepherd' to ones on being content, working for the Lord, thunderstorms, safe travel, showing kindness, pets, doctors visits, and even one on praying for our countries leaders!

Originally I thought I would read this book on my own and share a few entries with my little niece but since its arrival there have been many moments where she and I have sat down and read it together. In fact it has become a real favorite of hers and she insists each time we read it to flip through all the pages on her own as she chatters away 'telling me the story' and pointing out all the little details in the drawings. The illustrations for this book were done by the obviously talented Ruth Zeglin and are done in a pen and colored pencil style with rich colors that hold a nice softness to them making reading a children's book a treat not a chore. Each one of the drawings has a theme of a cuddly lamb included (perfect for my families love of lambs!) and other cool things like how the animals are giving hugs, or the sprinkling of ladybugs on each entry. This makes for engaging talk time with your little one on what is happening in the pictures and before I knew it my niece was pointing things out to me too!

Having a little one in the house now has made this book a double delight to read and review- and make no doubt about it this book is a real delight- a hands down winner! If you don't have kiddos at your house go pick up a copy (or two) anyway and keep it for when they visit or give one to the friend or relative that has the kids- you won't regret it!

    Final Rating: 5

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and opinion of the product.

I loved this little prayer devotional and so did my son! It was simply perfect for him at the age of 2 with colorful pictures and wonderful rhyming phrases such as "Nothing too big, nothing too small, just pray to God about it all!"

It was so cool to see my son get excited about prayer time! When he was ready to go to bed he would bring this book over to me so we could read our nightly chapter! I think his favorite part was the hug time since he seemed most enthuastic about that! However he really enjoyed looking at the pictures as well and pointing out different things such as birds or kittens!

However, not only did my son truly benefit from this book, but I did too! They little sayings and prayers stuck with me as I read through the book! The snuggle time thoughts were a good opening to the bedtime Bible thoughts and the variety of things that we prayed about was fanastic! It goes from all the way to praying for our pets, to self-control, and probably my favorite one: prayer about saying "I love you, Lord!"

The only downfall about the book is that I really wish there was a ribbon to mark the page! It would have been helpful since my little toddler likes to take out any bookmarks in the book!

Beside that, this book is a must have for young kids! I definitely plan to reread this one again in the future because it has great messages/prayers that a child can understand and hold his attention (granted I know my son didn't get everything being so young, but he will soon enough)! I highly recommend it for kids 3-5!

I give Bedtime Prayers That End with a Hug! a 5 out of 5 stars!

Bedtime Prayers That End with a Hug! by Stephen Elkins is a beautifully illustrated bedtime devotional for kids ages 3 - 5.

With gentle, calming text and warm, soothing colors, this moving devotional is the perfect way to settle your youngster down at bedtime. Each theme includes a Bible verse, a "snuggle time" application, a "bedtime Bible thought," and a "my hug-a-bye-prayer," and ends with "hug! time" between the child and the reader.

It can be challenging to write devotionals for young children. While I would sit down with our girls each night to read from their children's Bible, I would have loved a book of this nature that shows them how to thank the Lord, think of others, teaches them about self-control and giving, and so many other things that will help them in their Christian journeys.

A padded hardcover, Bedtime Prayers That End with a Hug! features a presentation page so you can give this as a gift, and has a place at the end for the child to tape or glue a picture of their family to the page so they can remember to pray for them each day. The final page includes special Bible verses to remember.

    Highly recommended!

Devotionals for little kids are hard to write - and too often I find them shallow and missing out on the big-picture of what scripture is telling us. But I have to say I was impressed with the Bedtime Prayers that End with a Hug. Most appropriate for young children (I'd say 2-4), they are short and to the point, yet they are also very clear and theologically sound.

One thing I loved about the book was the simplicity and also directness of the prayers themselves. These were prayers I can pray with my girls, that they can understand, but also that have deep truth contained in them. The book makes a great supplement to reading an appropriate children's bible (personally, I would recommend the Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Loyd-Jones) and can begin the life-long process of teaching our kids both the importance of pray and the process of actually praying.

Overall I'll give this book 4/5 stars. For the record, I did a receive a complementary copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest, though not necessarily favorable, review.

This book of bedtime prayers was written for young children from the ages of three to five years old. It was designed to be used as loving lessons in preparing the child for the routine of bedtime prayer. Explanations are given to explain what prayer is and who the child is praying to, as well as a description regarding the importance of communication with God. Composed of 52 different bedtime prayers featuring a different topic, prayer preparations are arranged in steps. The first step is an easy to understand Bible verse. Following that is "snuggle time" which equates to a brief story pertinent to the Bible verse, a "bedtime Bible thought," and "my hug-a-bye prayer." This is followed by "Nighty Night! and the time to give the child a loving hug, communicating parental love and the love of God.

The illustrations included in Bedtime Prayer That End With A Hug are beautifully done, colorful, age appropriate, and diverse. They are cheerful and whimsical, adding a sense of fun and happiness to a child's training in bedtime prayer. These illustrations are impressive and add an atmosphere of joy to the world of prayer.

The bedtime prayers relate to numerous topics, such as being thankful, loving others, making good choices, being joyful, friendship, etc. Other topics that are featured include, fear of the dark, fear of thunderstorms, worrying, etc. Some of these concepts could be skipped over if a child doesn't exhibit those particular fears. My personal feeling in this regard is that introducing these concepts could instill fears in a child that otherwise don't exist. "Going to the Doctor" is one example of the possibility of instilling fear where there may be none. The verse for that particular prayer entry is Isaiah 41:10, "Don't be afraid, for I am with you." If the child exhibits a fear of doctors this is a helpful and loving way to give comfort, but with a child who is comfortable with his/her doctor this could instill fear where none exists.

It is important that the parent or caregiver use discretion with each individual child regarding what is appropriate for that given child and his or her age. Overall, I found this to be a very useful method of introducing bedtime prayer to young children. A few of the terms used are not age appropriate, but simplifying those terms would help to explain the message.
