The big hand of the clock is at 12.
The little hand is at 7.
It is seven o' clock.
It is bedtime for Frances.
It may be bedtime for Frances, but before Frances can sleep, she needs a glass of milk, a kiss from Father, one from Mother, her teddy bear, her doll, another kiss from Father, and another one from Mother. And then there are tigers and giants and ominous cracks in the ceiling to keep her up. Will Frances ever go to sleep?
Russell Hoban was the author of A Bargain for Frances, A Baby Sister for Frances, Best Friends for Frances, A Birthday for Frances, and Bread and Jam for Frances, all illustrated by Lillian Hoban. He also wrote Bedtime for Frances, illustrated by Garth Williams.Garth Williams began his work on the pictures for the Little House books by meeting Laura Ingalls Wilder at her home in Missouri, and then he traveled to the sites of all the little houses. His charming art caused Laura to remark that she and her family "live again in these illustrations."

Or is it? Every child will appreciate the dilemma Francis goes through as she struggles against her bedtime and pursues various tactics to delay the process. Her simple child like fears of the dark, noises and such will be familiar to other children. Her fears are written about in such an obviously humorous manner, the joke being on Francis, that they will not alarm even timid readers. Her parents are depicited as loving, but eventually firm parents, when pushed to the limit by a very tired little badger. Garth Williams is a good illustrator who seems to capture moods well. He has done justice to this story as usual. I recommend other Francis books as well, gentle stories for children, with a special humour.
