Kassian. In a world that pushes feminism, I wanted to find a biblical perspective on womanhood, and this book delivers.
Why even read about biblical womanhood? Kassian sums it up well on page 121, saying, "Your womanhood was created to tell the spectacular story of what a love relationship with Jesus is all about." She goes on to flesh out that picture even more, helping readers understand just how important the issue of biblical womanhood and marriage are—how they tell the gospel story.
Becoming God's True Woman. . . While I Still Have a Curfew is a 35-day study that includes daily devotionals and journaling questions. In part 1, Susan Hunt leads readers through the basic biblical principles of biblical womanhood. Mary Kassian addresses the practical implications of those principles in part two of the book. Sprinkled throughout are testimonies of teen girls and women, making it more real and personal, and helping readers see the principles at work in everyday life.
Be warned: much of what you will read and study in Becoming God's True Woman. . .While I Still Have a Curfew is counter-cultural. But it's biblical, and it relies heavily on scripture. That's one thing that makes is such a great resource. The book will lead you through a wide variety of topics like gender equality and design, modesty, wisdom, habits, attitudes, faithfulness, and negative influences—all from a biblical perspective.
One of my favorite sections of part one was Hunt's comparison of the True Woman (God's original intention and design) and the New Woman (after sin entered the picture). She shows readers how sin takes women from being helpers and life-givers and turns them into hinderers and life-takers. "Becoming a life-giver—a true woman—is a lifelong process," she says. "It takes the power of the gospel to transform us from life-takers to life-givers."
In part two, Kassian leads readers through a study of two types of girls in the book of Proverbs—the Wild Thing and the Wise Thing. As she leads teens to compare and contrast the two, Kassian shows readers that a Wise Things lives God's way while a Wild Thing relies on herself rather than God's wisdom. She says, "Becoming a true woman is all about living for God's glory—and that's not an abstract idea. It's practical. It affects the choices you make every day."
While my own daughter is just a pre-teen, I already plan to work through this study with her in a couple of years. It's a valuable resource that's biblical and practical. I also plan to use this in a small group setting with teen girls in our church and community. I highly recommend this biblical, practical resource for individuals, small groups, homeschools, or mother-daughter studies.
