The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket and comes out with a dog. A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone, and because of Winn-Dixie, Opal meets Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of War and Peace. She meets Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar. Opal spends all that summer collecting stories about her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie, or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns that friendship--and forgiveness--can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Rated PG, approximate running time is 109 minutes.

The "subtle" issues with this film are pretty overt, to me. A child who goes off, doing whatever she wants, unprotected. She yells disrespectfully at her father constantly and never really submits to his authority. Names are called; children are mean and rude. No real gospel message or care. Setting of the movie is rather depressing. Do not let your kids see what you don't want them to emulate. adisrespectful, lonely child who always does whatever she wants is not a heroine in my book, nor in His.

I wouldn't want anyone to let their children watch, "Because of Winn-Dixie" because of the parrot which keeps saying a phrase like this: "Shut-Up Idiot!" This phrase really sticks in the kid's minds and then your children end up repeating this over and over! Do your family a favor and DON'T watch this one!!!! It also has kids going off by themselves which is very dangerous nowadays!

I loved this movie! I had read the books to my children a couple years before the book came out and we all enjoyed it very much! This movie is well done!

Fantastic Christian movie for the entire family... Shows the life a Christian family goes through after losing their Mother to Alcohol. The Father, a pastor trying to provide for family and his flock has many decisions to make that are not easy. The daughter befriends a dog because most of the other children don't take to new children. Later, with the help of the dog, the little girl finds out that many of the children also have great crosses to bear in their lives; which results in many new friendships with young and old alike..... My children liked this movie, even though the younger ones didn't really understand the adult overtones.
Prayer and song throughout.... The mother was missing from action from the start, so no alcohol was involved....

This is a GREAT movie for the family to watch together (not many of these around anymore). I am a senior and have watched this several times and liked it better with each viewing. The kid and dog are wonderful. You will NOT be disappointed if you purchase this movie and feel good when children watch it over and over!!!!!

Me and my BFF loved it! She even named her new pooch Dixie after the movie! AWESOME religious thing! Great story line! Never boring! Couldn't leave my seat for ANYTHING!!!

Wow. Having been a divorced mom for almost 7 years and having done much to stay close to God and teach my (now) 10-year-old daughter to love and follow Him, I could understand much of the struggles of the preacher. And I also understand and delight in the way our Heavenly Father works through the love of a child to bring people together--especially those who would not otherwise take the time or trouble to care for one another.
