Total surrender to God: the surprising key to experiencing the sense of peace and purpose you crave.
There is a gnawing feeling inside all of us that says we could be better. If we would just be more organized or work a little harder, wed finally have the rich and fulfilling life we want.
But the message of the cross is different.
The message is not one of God saying, "I died for your sins to work as a consultant to help you achieve the life youre determined to have." Jesus died to reconcile us to God so that we can die and give our lives to him and to othersa total surrender that is truly a beautiful defeat!
Perspective and peace in the midst of the stormy chaos of life are always available to the person who lives a surrendered life. The result is a rich existence basking in the pleasure and approval of God.
Bookworm5 Stars Out Of 5Good ReadDecember 16, 2014BookwormThe title of the book is what first my grabbed my attention. The author was very down to earth and transparent; using his own life experiences, mistakes and hardships to explain how vital it is to give our flawed life to God so that he can make the best out of it.
Here is an excerpt from chapter four:
A choice faces us every time we are in a mess, entrapped in sin, or confronting our enemy in the world: Will I believe that God can find me here and find a way forward in the mess or will I harden my heart, protect my pride, and simply wish I were somewhere else?
This author discusses real life struggles that can only be changed by accepting that we are weak, and that God has a solution for those weaknesses. He also discusses the three sources of sin: the flesh, the world and the devil.
This book was such a great read, I looked forward to picking it up every night until I completed it. I was challenged, enlightened and inspired. I was also provoked to think about my own life in Christ and how surrendered I really am?
Furthermore, at the end of each chapter, the author is intentional about encouraging your participation with an action step and prayer.
Overall, the major point of this book is deciding to live a surrendered life to God.

We know we are to be surrendered, but saying it is much easier than doing it.
Malarkey shares his thoughts on surrender. He suggests the starting point on the journey is honesty, with God and with others. He looks at the nature of sin. He says we need to know our enemies so he explores Satan, the world, and our flesh. He reminds us that God graciously provides a way forward in our mess, if we are willing, and that the central teaching of Christianity is that we must die. He has suggestions for finding our mission from God and preparing for it. He encourages us to let others help us in our struggles, even though it will be messy. We are to become addicted to our need for Go, he says. We are to look at what might be difficult for us and have a battle plan, remembering that we can learn from others.
Malarkey had serious problems with anger and he shares several of his experiences. His story is good evidence of God's grace, that He always provides a way forward in the mess if we allow Him to do so.
This book is a good reminder of the journey to a surrendered life. That journey is going to be messy but God will be there with us.
If you have not read much on the surrendered life, this would be a very readable and honest look at it. If you have read other books on the topic, you may nit find anything new in this one.
Food for thought:
Struggle is a team sport. (104)
The surrendered life is the life of obedience to the clear, obvious, everyday things he asks of you and me. (117)
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
Anngladys GichuhiKenyaAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A Beautiful Defeat by Kevin MalarkyAugust 2, 2014Anngladys GichuhiKenyaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 4Meets Expectations: 4Many times in life we do not want to be defeated. We want to be at the top, number one the bestand not just that, but often too, on our own terms. And if we come on top on someone elses terms, we want to be noticed, applauded, celebrated.
This book talks about giving up that perceived right to be in charge, in control. It talks about admitting our failures, and even asking for help, very importantly, it talks about admitting our weaknesses, and acknowledging that we cannot do it all, let alone do it all right.
The author comes clean about his failures, even an accident in which he was the at-fault driver, through which his own child became paralyzed. It rarely gets more raw than that in real life. And then seeking for Gods help concerning our weak areas, and asking Him to enable us to do well, or to simply stop trying in those areas, and follow His path, which is more bearable for us, because His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
This is a book I would read again for fresh inspiration for the daily issues of life. My prayer is that many people can get to read it, allow themselves to be vulnerable to God and then accept His will for their lives.
Second Book to the RightMedford, MAAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Morbid at timesJuly 25, 2014Second Book to the RightMedford, MAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 2Value: 3Meets Expectations: 1I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not too impressed by this book. The author had some points that he made, but I don't see much of a difference between his points and the points that every other "Give your life to God completely" book out there makes. It was good to read that the author had his own struggles to deal with, so that he didn't sound like a preachy, holier-than-thou author. It brought a level of realism to the situations that he wrote about.
However, the biggest issue I had was the step about dying, especially the action step of writing your own death certificate. Morbid? Yes! If you have ever been the one to sit at the table to give the details of your departed loved one's life, to be the one to fill in the blanks on that death certificate, you will realize how morbid this step really is, and how emotionally troubling it would be to fill out your own death certificate. Can anyone imagine how disturbing that would be if a spouse or child came across that?
A suggestion here I would make would be to make a death certificate not for yourself, but for your struggles. You struggle with anger? Take his action step and make a death certificate for your anger. Let it die, let God take over.
KayetkmSydney, AustraliaAge: 45-54Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5A book about surrendering to GodJuly 17, 2014KayetkmSydney, AustraliaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1This will be a short book review. It could be as short as five words:
I did not like it.
The premise of this book is that Christians should surrender their lives to God and that this is not always easy because of our sin. The author, Kevin Malarkey, describes ten principles that have helped him to live a "surrendered life".
One of these ten principles is described in each of the ten chapters of this book. Each chapter starts with a story from Malarkey's life where he has sinned, and is followed by a discussion of the principle that is being described with an occasional biblical reference. The chapters conclude with an action step and prayer. The principles are things like:
Be honest about your existing struggles.
Determine to live through your struggles rather than around them.
Become addicted to your need for God.
While I don't disagree with the basic idea that we all sin; just think of Romans 3:23 "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God". The principles described in this book seem to ignore two things: the grace of God and the power of the cross, as the reader is encouraged to apply each of the principles to his/her life.
So, as much as I don't like writing such a negative review, I wouldn't bother with this book.
