Dale Hudson5 Stars Out Of 5May 26, 2010Dale HudsonDr. Sawyer's book is so effective because it is written from his personal experiences. I have had the same journey and this book has been a great help and encouragement to me. If you are going through depression or know someone who is, get this book in their hands.
John Gibbs4 Stars Out Of 5May 23, 2010John GibbsThis book is informative, challenging and to the point. The scriptural basis for Dr. Sawyer's conclusions and observations on this subject are a must read for Christian workers, especially those in full time ministry.
Bill E. Sawyer5 Stars Out Of 5May 18, 2010Bill E. SawyerI read Dr. Sawyer's book, THE BLACK DOG, and I found it informative and instructive. I, personally, battled THE BLACK DOG in 1964, at a time when I was trying to establish a new business. As I read Dr. Sawyer's book, I could trace the steps I had taken that plunged me into deep depression. I now feel I can better identify and even offer some support to others who are battling the BLACK DOG.

Tell us a little about yourself. I am a graduate of Free Will Baptist Bible College, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Reformed Theological Seminary; with post graduate studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and the University of South Africa. I've been happily married to my precious wife, Terri, for nearly 35 years. We have three children whom we love beyond words. Presently, we're pastoring the First Free Will Baptist Church of Gastonia, NC., where we've ministered for 16 years.
What was your motivation behind this project? For more than a decade I've battled depression. Each bout with the "Black Dog" has taught me more about myself, my weaknesses, and the strength of my LORD. I wrote "Battling the Black Dog" to help make sense out of what I've been through.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? First and foremost, I want my readers to know they're not alone in suffering from depression. Notable Christian leaders of each age have "battled the black dog." Additionally, I want folks to know how it happens, why it happens, and what to do about it.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? It was very difficult to tell my own story. In opening up myself, I know I risk cricitism from those who choose to reject the idea that spiritual ministry invites the "black dog" to attack. But I'm convinced that the stresses and strains of spiritual warfare lead many to seasons of doubt and confusion. On a positive note, working through this process enabled me to articulate the disciplines that have been an invaluable resource in keeping the black dog at bay. More than anything, I want victory for those who struggle with stress-disease and depression.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Without my wife I would have given up many times over. But she wouldn't let me. Praying with her is one of the greatest inspirations of my life. Also, I love books, and my favorite author is C. S. Lewis. He challenges me in ways other simply do not. More than anything, of course, God's Word provides me with strength, hope, and faith. As a working pastor, I spend hours each week in the Word, and only eternity will reveal the blessing this kind of life has meant to me. I love the Bible more than I can express.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I know right away that my writing is not well-known, and I'm amazed any time someone says they've read my work. But if no one ever read my books, I would still write; I can't help but express myself. And I want to inform, encourage, and edify. I would love to have feed back if you are so inclined. God Bless!
