Product Description

This true story demonstrates God's faithfulness to an Amish couple. Simon's refusal to submit to the Amish rules stresses his marriage. The bishops demand that Susan, his wife, must obey the rules she promised to keep and to shun her rebel husband. Who was she to obey, God or man? Together they become a perfect team to set their family free from the bondage of "religion." The story is told by their daughter, Naomi, born to them after they leave this close-knit community. These heartbreaking and joyous stories are life-changing and proclaim the mighty truth that God continues to care for and work in the lives of the simple, the wounded, and the brokenhearted. Naomi shares how she came to see the rich, deep, powerful beauty and value in the "silent years" of her mother's life, who courageously lived a broken life for the sake of her divine inheritance, hidden in her earthly inheritance, a basket full of broken dishes.

Author Info

Growing up with an Amish background, Naomi Stutzman comes from one of the largest extended Amish families recorded in Geauga County, Ohio, and she was the only one not born Amish. The passion for her Amish family grew as she saw the great example of love her parents had toward their relatives in spite of the shunning. Naomi and her husband live in Twinsburg Ohio; they have four children and ten grandchildren.

A perfect example of how God can reach out to us no matter what our background is, and is still able to carry out HIS plan.

The author admitted several times that she is not a writer. I was glad to know what some of the shunning did to families. It was much better toward the end of the book than at the beginning.

This true story made me sad about how some people can be so cruel and yet through it some survive.

I love Amish stories, yet I had not read anything like this, and took a chance because the price was right and I was feeling adventurous. While it's not my normal style of writing, I was pleasantly surprised and drawn in, and loved reading it. It was worth stepping out of my box, and trying something a little different.
