Product Description

This volume has never before been translated from its original German to English. It is a treasure-trove of diaries, letters, essays, and sermons from when Bonhoeffer was vicar in Barcelona; the preparation of his postdoctoral thesis; occasional lectures; travel in the U.S., Cuba, and Mexico; and his fateful return to academic and ecclesiastical life in Germany. Many do not know of Bonhoeffer's travels before his imprisonment by the Nazis. He was in the United States when he was overwhelmed with guilt for abandoning his countrymen in their time of great need during World War II and returned to Germany to assist a company in an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works Series offers material from some of Bonhoeffer's most influential thoughts along with biographical information about his life, ministry, and imprisonment. Bonhoeffer was a man of strong convictions; this dedication to the wholeness of the Gospel cost him his life at the hand of the Nazi regime during World War II. Each volume in this series is rich with Bonhoeffer's wisdom of what it takes to follow Christ in a fallen world.

Publisher's Description

The period 1928 to 1931, which followed completion of his dissertation, was formative for Bonhoeffer's personal and pastoral and theological direction. Almost all of these nine hundred pages of writings appear in English here for the first time. They document the intense four-year period that included preparation of his postdoctoral thesis; a vicarage in Barcelona; occasional lectures; his postdoctoral academic year at Union Theological Seminary; travel around the United States, Cuba, and Mexico; and his re-entry into the German academic and ecclesial scene.

Author Bio

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–45), a German pastor and theologian, played a central role in the Confessing Church during the Nazi period and became one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century. He studied in Berlin and at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and wrote several books read widely in German and English. His theology and personal witness continue to challenge Christians of all denominations. Active in the German resistance movement, Bonhoeffer traveled extensively while working for the Abwehr, the German counterintelligence organization. His role in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler ultimately cost him his life, and he was hanged by the Gestapo on April 9, 1945.

Clifford J. Green is Professor Emeritus of Theology, Hartford Seminary, Connecticut, and author of Bonhoeffer: A Theology of Sociality.
