senior managing editor,
"This commentary gives a welcome bird's-eye view of the Bible. In addition, there are enough pictures and maps to help the reader also get a worm's-eye view of what the bird is seeing. That makes this commentary a welcome guide to the study of the Scriptures.
Harold John Ockenga Professor of Preaching, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary
Under the dynamic leadership of Gary Burge and Andrew Hill, a talented and diverse team of scholars has produced The Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary. Evangelical by conviction, this basic reference book gives ordinary Christians complete and reliable comment on every passage in the Bible. By treating the Bible as the Word of God, by providing a distinctively Christ-centered reading of the Old Testament, and by counterbalancing critical interpretations of Scripture, this new commentary promises to build up the church and help Bible readers understand the gospel.

Jim NasiumCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: Male5 Stars Out Of 5A+++, A "must have" commentary!February 20, 2015Jim NasiumCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I bought this book after doing much research on the matter. I reasearched both OT as well as the NT editors, prior to buying the book. Afterall, I'd never want to purchase anything from a false Christian "teacher," or anyone that has a past history of both scriptural and/or Christian doctrinal error. First off, the book is massive. It weighs a ton and i was quite surprised by the heft of this book! It's as thick as an old "yellow pages" phone book, with beautiful photography of ancient Christian and biblical artifacts, locations and references. The paper used in the book is of high quality and the binding is excellent for today's standards. The graphics are superb and this leads me to the most important aspect of the book: the literary content and opinion. Afterall, all biblical "commentaries" are just human "opinions" in published "book form" on the biblical text themselves. The commentary in this book is extensive, but not overbearing. You could buy volumes of bible commentaries like the "Pulpit's Commentary" and spend 10 times the price. Or, you can spend the affordable money on this Baker's commentary and have an enriching, thought provoking and scholastically apt resource all in one volume and at the tips of your fingers. This book is best suited for the "intermediate" and "advanced " bible student, based on verbage used throughout as well as scholastic content. If you want to mine the bible for all its worth, this commentary is a must-have on anyone's desk. I compare this book to "Mathew Henry's" commentary and give this (Baker's) version the hand's down, winning grade. The book's commentary follows the order of the bible, chapter by chapter and almost verse-by-verse. The book is a great companion to a KJV, NKJV, NIV, ESV and NASB translations of the bible. So much information in this book all the while in one volume, makes this book a must have. The opinions and key points of the book are basically "short, sweet and to the point," and without missing any relevant core Christian values or historical biblical facts. This commentary is the best companion to anyone's "study bible.".
bobspunkin5 Stars Out Of 5Great Resource!January 2, 2015bobspunkinI am very impressed with this commentary. Besides the commentary part, there are excellent photos, maps and other helps. My only problem, and it is my issue not the book's, is it is heavy. This is not a book you'd carry around in your purse. :) Just a great resource for me in my bible reading.
