Dinah Templeton spots three handsome Naval officers and discovers one of them is her kinsman, Captain Thomas Moberly, whom she hasn't met. The captain's brother is married to her cousin and his sister is married to Dinah's brother.

Dinah is splashed with "love at first sight" as they become acquainted. They enjoy spending time together, but she vows she will never marry a sea-faring man.

Since her parent's deaths, she is almost destitute so doesn't dress as most of the women with whom the captain usually is in contact on shore. Yet, when Moberly sees Dinah, he says, "Who would expect to find such beauty in this backward colony?"

Dinah lives with Artemis and Anne Hussey. Mrs. Hussey is a kind young woman reared by the Gardiner sisters of the Nantucket Friends Meeting, as Dinah was. Anne is one of Dinah's friends. Her husband, Artemis, however, is wicked and covetous of money and prestige. So he arranges a marriage for Dinah to the wealthy Mr. Richland.

Yet, Dinah has a standing proposal with Mr. Waterston, the short, paunchy proprietor of the General Store..

The United States is engaged in the Revolutionary War and Captain Moberly's work involves capturing pirates who intercept British vessels. His biggest target is the pirate Nighthawk, who brags he will never be captured.

Among Dinah's tangled web of relatives are some who fight for the Americans. Will Nighhawk kill the captain? Will the captain kill the pirate? How will the battle affect Dinah?

Louise Gouge does a great job weaving life-like characters from another era into a compelling story. I recommend this book.

The third book in Louise Gouge's East Florida colony series did not disappoint. The rich prose and characters with deep convictions that I've come to expect from Louise were richly evident in this novel.

Thomas Moberly doesn't understand why the colonists are rebelling against England's rule. Dinah Templeton, younger sister of Jamie Templeton from The Captain's Lady and a devout Loyalist, captures his attention at first sight. Already aware that this is his brother-in-law's sister, he takes it on himself to make sure she's being taken care of. Unbeknownst to him their families have been scheming for years to get them together.

Dinah is living with her foster sister in St. Augustine and assists the doctor at the fort. It's there she first sees Thomas Moberly. Their romance develops quickly, but believably. I particularly loved the elegant language Thomas used to express his affections and the proposal scene goes down as one of my favorites. Dinah is a strong character, but still period appropriate. Her Quaker upbringing shows in her strong convictions that never waver.

From the moment Captain Thomas Moberly entered the scene in The Captain's Lady, I wanted to know more about him. He struck me as a man of deep character. He did not disappoint. He and Dinah are Loyalists and I found it very interesting and wonderfully written. That's not a viewpoint seen often in fiction set during the Revolutionary War. Louise made me see their side of the issue and how it mattered to them.

Having Thomas on the cover of the book is also a huge plus. The book lives up to the promises made by the cover.

The first thing I noticed about The Captain's Command was the incredible cover. What a nice change of pace to see such a handsome male for the model :) Once I opened the book, I was pleased to find the elegant historical voice I associate with Louise. The story was engaging and romantic. I got a kick out of the way these very proper, duty-bound characters, one British and one American Loyalist, experienced and dealt with their passionate feelings for one another. They phrased everything so prettily and with great dignity. I also enjoyed that Louise looked at the American Revolution from a different angle this time. More than anything, I loved the spiritual threads of forgiveness and experiencing the true fatherhood of God. Great historical romance. I highly recommend it.

"At the Captain's Command" is a delightful historical set during the Revolutionary War. Dinah Templeton, living in an East Florida colony, believes her family is loyal to England, but she has the feeling there is something her family is not telling her. While the infamous pirate Nighthawk plagues the coastline, the Royal Navy arrives to protect the loyalists from the growing list of revolutionaries. The Dauntless commanded by Captain Thomas Moberly arrives in St. Augustine, Florida.

Attraction grows between Dinah and Thomas quickly, but Dinah has promised herself she will never marry a navy-man. Besides, it appears that Thomas is not interested in any romantic attachment to her anyway. How could he when he is of noble blood and she is not.

Dinah and Thomas's dilemma is set at a time when many in the American Colonies are throwing in their lot with the revolutionaries to win their independence. Dinah and Thomas must decide if their love for one another can bear the tug of loyalties from different directions.

Author Louise M. Gouge seamlessly weaves historical detail into her narrative, so that you feel as though you are there. You can smell the sea air, the rich humid Florida coastline, and feel the snap of canvas as the Dauntless sails the seas. She drew me in instantly and kept me turning the pages. This era and setting was a fresh new take of the War of Independence, and a novel I heartily endorse.

Louise M. Gouge's new release, At the Captain's Command, is a must-read for all lovers of historical romance. With the unexpected setting of Florida during the American Revolutionary War, Gouge captures the reader's imagination from the jump. Exquisitely written, this story of a colonial orphan and the British Naval officer she comes to love is chock-full of the romance, intrigue, and the delicious plot-twists readers of this wonderful author have come to expect. Dinah Templeton's vow to never marry a seagoing man is tested when she meets handsome British Naval captain, Thomas Moberly. Unlike his brother and sister, Thomas is determined to steer his heart from even the most beguiling colonial. But he soon finds his resolve scuttled by the charming Dinah. Just as their love sets sail, the war, family entanglements, and divided loyalties threaten to sink it. Throughout this delightful page-turner, Dinah and Thomas are forced to examine their hearts, their faith, and God's will for their lives. I heartily recommend this fabulous Revolutionary War romance with a citrus twist. Louise M. Gouge is at the top of her game with At the Captain's Command.
