In a forgotten age of darkness a magnificent king arose to light the world.
They called him unfit to rule—a lowborn, callow boy, Uther's bastard. But his coming had been foretold in the songs of the bard Taliesin. He had learned the uses of power from his guide and protector, Merlin. He was Arthur, Pendragon of the Island of the Mighty—who would rise to legendary greatness in a Britain torn by violence, greed and war; the Lord of Summer who would usher in a glorious reign of peace and prosperity . . . and whose noble, trusting heart would be broken by treachery.
Stephen R. Lawhead is an internationally acclaimed author of mythic history and imaginative fiction. His works include Byzantium and the series The Pendragon Cycle, The Celtic Crusades, and The Song of Albion. Lawhead makes his home in Austria with his wife.
The Masked Reviewer5 Stars Out Of 5April 11, 2002The Masked ReviewerArthur has probably before been called an instant classic, and I think it earned that. From the beginning of Arthur's reign (before, actually) to the book's surprise ending, Arthur is a realistic version of many and diverse Arthurian myths, legends, and perhaps true stories. Arthur is the climax of the Pendragon Cycle. Those first two books, Taliesin and Merlin, they were just setting this one up. This book was quite excellent. The three parts were written by three different characters, giving three different viewpoints of the High King and Pendragon Arthur. From epic battle to epic battle, the book holds the fantastic yet realistic quality seen in the first two Pendragon Cycle books. Still, I have to admit that the ending did, to be discreet, surprise me. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this wasn't it. Can't say more, otherwise this won't get posted, and you won't see any. Despite the interesting ending, this book was a great climax to Taliesin and Merlin, and I look forward to reading Pendragon and Grail.
