The Honest, Loving Answers Children Need to Hear

What should you say when your five-year-old asks about his dying grandma? Or when your seven-year-old wonders if the devil is real? Or when the sixth graders in your Sunday school class are talking about a tragedy they heard about on the news? When it comes to the dark and tragic aspects of our world, it can be hard to know what to say and how much.

Mother/daughter team Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson will carefully walk you through difficult conversations, one topic at a time. Speaking from personal experience, informed by child development research, these two moms offer practical insights and age-appropriate guidance.

Talking about tough topics may not be as hard as you think, and, more important, you'll see how these conversations can lead to meaningful discussions of God's unchanging goodness.

"I love this book! I will recommend it again and again. It is street-level theology for children that drips with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Parents, read it, live with it, share it daily with your children, and not only will they learn and grow, you will, too."--Paul David Tripp, president, Paul Tripp Ministries

"This is a scripturally rooted and profoundly wise guide for parents who desire to weave gospel truths into the answers to their kids' toughest questions. I highly recommend this book. It takes the pressure off of parents to have all the perfect answers, reveals the radical nature of God's grace, and weaves the 'scarlet thread of redemption' through every answer."--Jeannie Cunnion, MSW, author of Parenting the Wholehearted Child

"These hard questions aren't random--children wonder about these issues, and they impact our everyday lives. Now talking about these questions doesn't have to be overwhelming for lack of resources. I'm so thankful for Elyse and Jessica's hard work, precision, and focus on Christ in this book."--Gloria Furman, author of Glimpses of Grace and Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full

"Martin Luther once said he measured his ability as a preacher by his ability to communicate the gospel to the young. This book is filled with such gospel truth, so simply articulated. No one has helped me connect the gospel to parenting more than Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson."--J. D. Greear, PhD, author of Ready to Launch: Jesus-Centered Parenting in a Child-Centered World and Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart

"As a mother of seven, I'm always interested in grace-filled, Bible-based answers to the tough questions of this life. Elyse and Jessica do a beautiful job of balancing truth with grace, while offering parents practical, solid answers to topics that many parents cringe over. I'll be looking at this great guide again and again, not because it contains all the answers, but because the authors humbly point parents back to the only source of truth that's ever existed: the Bible."--Heidi St. John, author and speaker

"This is a great book to help answer the big theological questions of little children."--Pastor Mark Driscoll

"Elyse and Jessica have written a must-have book for parents and those involved with ministry to children. It provides helpful, gracious, wise, and faithful answers to some of the most difficult questions children can ask about the Christian faith.."--Justin S. Holcomb, Episcopal priest and seminary professor

Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson wrote this book with the goal of helping every parent answer some of the tough questions children could ask. The range of questions the authors explore are death, sin, divorce, and the explanation of difficult Bible stories. What I found helpful is that the explanations were divided by age groups. The authors also wrote helpful scripts designed to aid parents explain these topics to their children.

In my opinion, this book can be really helpful for parents. I found the scripts used age appropriate language for each stage of child development and serves as a great example of how to conduct these type of conversations. I also found that this book is very practical and relevant for types of questions children may ask today.

This book was written by a mother and daughter team and deals with answer some questions your kids might ask you. Some of the topics dealt with include death, Satan, divorce, natural disasters, fighting and killing and a few other topics. Each chapter describes what your child might ask and some possible explanations and real life situations that can apply. Each chapter gives you a breakdown of a suggest script for pre-school age, age 5 to 10 and age 11 and up.

While I didn't agree with everything that was suggested and said, a lot of what they do say are good suggestions of how you can deal with these questions and situations. They answer all these questions from a Godly and Biblical basis. It is refreshing to see when there are so many other books or suggestions out there that keep God out of answering some of these questions.

I don't have any kids, but wanted to get this book to see if it might be helpful to me as I work with kids on a regular basis at my church. This book might be helpful to parents who struggle with knowing how to answer some of their kids questions. While I fully understand the lack of time for parents to read, this book is short (under 200 pages) and a quick read.

I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers for the sole purpose of this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expresses herein are my own.

Review: Answering Your Kids' Toughest Questions

In this day and age where we, even in the church, are pressured to say what people want to hear, rather than just proclaim the truths like they are revealed in the Bible, it is great to see this mother and grown daughter teamed up to put this Bible-based book together, though the majority of the speaking in this book is from Jessica (the daughter). I also like how the book is written. The answers are right on and pointing you to the Bible for their answers.

Some of these subjects are hard to answer especially to kids, but Jessica (and Elyse) do a real good job at providing age-appropriate answers without compromising Biblically in their answers. Sadly, too many others writing to and regarding kids often are "nice," but include little to any truth.

Some of the subjects dealt with include sin, why people die, why people divorce, what is hell, natural disasters, sexual sin, homosexuality, et cetera. Their answers are age appropriate, Biblical and not "sugar coated." Each subject has examples of answers that are appropriate to different age groups.

I like that the book is written by a mother and daughter team, and especially how they both contribute their own personal experiences and insights.

Some of their explanations for kids are equally beneficial for some adults who still have questions about these same subjects, though it is written for parents to help answer kids' tough questions.

While this is a short book (under 200 pages) and only 10 short chapters, it is very practical and real. While the authors make it clear they don't understand everything, they offer some good insight into these tough questions from their Biblical insight and experience. I believe this book is worthy of your time and may help you and your kids have a better understanding of these tough questions. If you are a grandparent, parent, youth pastor, pastor, or counselor get this book as I believe it will be a help to you. It is also suitable for older kids to read themselves, too.

**I received this book for free from Bethany House in exchange for this review.**

Chances are if you've got kids you've been faced with answering some pretty tough questions. How do you go about answering the really tough ones? You know the ones . . . why do people die? what about homosexuality? rape? incest? and on and on and on. What's a parent to do in an age of political correctness and the glorifying of sinful lifestyles?

The mother/daughter team of Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson take a candid look at some of the hardest questions that parents face and give solid advice on how to approach the topics with your children. From the beginning of the book they make it clear that it is impossible to give children answers without understanding the answers yourself.

Remember how your parents would sometimes answer "because I said so". Have you ever given that answer? I know I have! I usually wind up giving that answer when I myself don't quite understand why I'm giving the answer I'm giving. As parents that are trying to give godly answers to these hard questions it is important that we first understand the biblical reasoning behind the answer.

Each chapter addresses a touchy topic. The question is asked and then the authors begin by stating what the scriptural context is. They also address what the enemy would like us to believe. The suggested answers are also divided up into age group appropriateness. We all know how awkward it can be to start answering something and realize that we have given our preschooler way too much information! Another thing they talk about is the follow up questions. This is a very thorough book for being so small. I really liked how each chapter ended with the 'In A Nutshell' segment. This small section really helped to solidify what was presented.

If you have kids or grandkids or even if you just work with kids, you need to get this book. Is every sticky question addressed in the book? Of course not, but it does give a great jumping off point for changing your thinking about how to answer tough questions. This is a great resource that you can turn to again and again when those tough questions get asked at any age.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

There are many normal questions that can come from children of all ages. For example:

    1. Why Do People Die?

    2. Who Is Satan? What Is Hell?

    3. Why And How Do Some People Sin Sexually?

    4. Why Do People Get Divorced?

These are just a few of the questions Fitzpatrick and Thompson tackle. I loved the fact that this was a mother daughter teaming up and using their wisdom together. To have such a strong mother daughter relationship is one I hope to continue to have with Chief.

The answers were given with Biblical references. They dont give you just a blanket answer. They break it down for different age groups. Fitzpatrick and Thompson always explain that even for that age group you know your own child and must determine their maturity level. I believe their answers were thought out and very well done but again you know your own child and must determine how you will answer them.

I also liked the summary at the end of each chapter as well. While this book doesnt provide answers to EVERY question like Why cant I wear underwear on my head? it does give a good basic foundation to some of the harder questions that can pop out of our childrens mouths unexpectedly.
