Publisher's Description

Answering Islam evaluates the claims of orthodox Islam from a Christian point of view, appealing especially to the Qur'an and the Bible. The authors, a Christian apologist and a former Muslim, provide apologetic answers to prepare Christians for ministry in the Islamic context. This second edition contains two new appendices, a new preface written in light of September 11, 2001, and updated information throughout.
"This book is a theological masterpiece, the most lucid and comprehensive theological analysis and critique of Islam from a Christian perspective I have ever seen. It is invaluable as a tool for understanding the most serious religious challenge to Christianity in the modern world." R. C. Sproul, Ligonier Ministries

As our church approaches its annual missions conference, the theme this year is "Reaching Muslims with the Gospel." In order to educate myself over the past six months, I have read seven books on Islam. Each has been helpful in its own way, some far more than others. I have found "Answering Islam" by Norm Geisler and Abdul Saleeb (not his real name) is be far and away the most comprehensive and practical. Originally published in 1993, it was updated and revised following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. There are three major parts to the book, four if you count the helpful appendices near the end. The basic beliefs of orthodox Islam are clearly laid out, followed by a Christian response to them along with a positive defense of the Christian perspective. Ample footnotes allow the reader to explore in greater depth the primary sources to which the authors refer. Having had the privilege of being a student of Dr. Geisler, I was happy to see that he maintained just as solid an apologetic yet practical style in this volume as I remember his lectures to have been in the seminary classroom. I would clearly encourage those looking for a "crash course" in Islam from an evangelical perspective to bypass the other books on the market and go straight to this one. Digesting it will take time (which is to suggest that for many it will be a slow read), but it is well worth the investment. Don't skip the appendices! The one addressing "Islam and Violence" will be an eye-opener for some. I wish the appendix dealing with "Black Islam" had been expanded. The "background" section to that appendix (contributed by another writer) also could have been written in a less confusing manner. Despite this minor flaw, this book should be made available to anyone who seeks to address the rapid rise of Islam in today's world and in our nation in particular.

Dr. Giesler is so knowledgeable in Bible Doctrine and Theology in general. His co-author, a former Muslim, gives a clear picture of Muslim belief and thinking. Christians need to understand what we're up against and how to deal with it.

Amazing to see that there are actually muslims posting stuff on this book review on christianbook.com. This is a great book, and it accompanies the website well. It has some well balanced facts and despite what people say, no one is truly objective so there will always be biases. I am just amazing at how people say they are "born Christian" or "raised Christian." Going to church doesn't make you a Christian, just like standing in a garage doesn't make you a car "vroom vroom." The western world needs to see religion is not ethnicity...

The book states facts about Islam. I don't hate Muslims, they can be saved too. I think Muslims are writing reviews on Christian literature so they can pretend they found Islam was better and then they converted. Facts are that Isiah 53 is the same as it was in 100bc. Muhammed used the torah to handle a dispute. The Koran says Jesus was holy, born of a virgin and that Allah would cause Isa ( Jesus) to be put to death and raised. This is noty said about any other prophet in the Koran. You say that the bible is corrupt. At what point was it corrupted. Did the corruptor collect all the bible from every home and library( switch words around) and then place them back without anyone knowing. If you're posting lies about christianity this site should cut your comment. After all this is christianbook.com not I refuse christianity so I converted.com

A great resource for understanding some of the fundamental differences between Christianity and Islam. Contrary to the emotional assertions of some reviewers, this book is not hate-filled propaganda. Christianity and Islam present two very different, often opposing messages that cannot both be right. Like any good Christian apologetics book, its aim is to foster understanding and, ultimately, to offer proof for the superiority of Christ and the Christian faith.
