Editorial Reviews

John Harvey’s Anointed with the Spirit and Power: A Biblical Theology of Holy Spirit Empowerment is a first-class work that combines perceptive analyses, balanced insights, and helpful applications. In eight chapters the author sets out penetrating surveys of the Holy Spirit’s empowerment of God’s people as portrayed in the Scriptures, from Genesis through Revelation. Each of the book’s eight analytical chapters also includes an important application section on “Lessons for Life.” In addition, its final ninth chapter highlights and spells out a number of matters regarding the Spirit’s empowerment that are highly relevant for every earnest Christian and the confessing church today. Dr. Harvey is a first-class scholar, whose writing is crisp, direct, and engaging. His theology is thoroughly orthodox, and his insights, while expressed easily in common language, are profound. Further, his pastoral purposes are clear: 1) to show how in a great variety of ways the Holy Spirit has empowered God’s people to accomplish God’s purposes in the nation Israel and throughout the wider non-Jewish world, and 2) to urge that as followers of Jesus Christ we allow the Spirit to empower also our lives and our churches—doing so in a variety of ways, for the accomplishment of God’s purposes, and with the portrayals of the Spirit’s empowerment in Scripture as paradigms for our own lives and churches. Anointed with the Spirit and Power is a small book on a big and explosive topic that is highly recommended for every Christian’s study and personal growth. It would also serve as an excellent textbook for a young adult or older Christian study group that could meet for eight to ten sessions—not only because of its perceptive analyses and helpful applications, but also because of its study questions that are included for each of the chapters. May God bless the book’s publication! Far more, however, than that: may God bless all who read and study it with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit!
If a good book is supposed to provoke clear, critical thinking on a given topic, then John Harvey’s Anointed with the Spirit and Power: A Biblical Theology of Holy Spirit Empowerment is a good book. His topic is one about which readers will gain much from thoughtful analysis of the data. Harvey offers a clear presentation of issues along with a readable treatment of the data. He interacts primarily with the biblical text but is also conversant with scholarly discussion, particularly in the NT section. Harvey adduces a biblical theology as he works diachronically through the progress of revelation. He prods the reader to think clearly about the evidence and offers an approach to practical synthesis of the data by way of “lessons for life” at the end of each chapter. His offering of helpful, thought-provoking questions for study and reflection enhances the value of Anointed with the Spirit and Power for both the individual reader and for group study and discussion. Harvey fills a gap in the thinking of many Christians by making a solid contribution to understanding the person and work of the Spirit of God in the First Testament and demonstrating a significant continuity between the two Testaments. Without diminishing that contribution one bit, one could wish for the same depth of treatment of that data as is given to the NT data. Anointed with the Spirit and Power is well-written and quite accessible to range of readers from pastor and teacher to student and thoughtful layperson.
This latest volume in the promising Explorations in Biblical Theology series should prove useful to pastors, students, and reflective Christians. In Anointed with the Spirit and Power: A Biblical Theology of Holy Spirit Empowerment, John Harvey guides us through the pivotal biblical texts related to the Holy Spirit’s empowering work, especially noting the Spirit’s empowerment of Old Testament leaders and prophets, the person and ministry of Jesus, and the early church. This book is well-organized, clear, fair, and helpful.
In the book of Acts, people of God filled with the Spirit and wisdom and faith turned their world upside down. What could Spirit-empowered people of God accomplish in our world today? John Harvey’s Anointed with the Spirit and Power helps to answer this question by tracing the theme of Holy Spirit empowerment throughout the entire Bible and by drawing out crucial lessons for life based directly on Scripture. This book serves as an invitation to discover what the Holy Spirit wants to do in and through your life.
There are many misconceptions today about systematic, biblical, and applicatory theology. One sometimes gets the impression that these are opposed to one another, and that the first two, at least, are so obscure that ordinary people should avoid them like the plague. The series Explorations in Biblical Theology seeks to correct these misunderstandings, to bring these disciplines together in a winsome, clear unity, edifying to non-specialists. The authors are first-rate, and they write to build up our faith, by pointing us to Christ. That’s what biblical and systematic theology at their best have always done, and the best application of Scripture has always shown us in practical ways how to draw on the rich blessings of Jesus’ salvation. I hope that many will read these books and take them to heart.
Anointed with the Spirit and Power provides a solid discussion of the person and work of the Holy Spirit from Genesis to Revelation. Its straightforward language commends it to a wide audience, while its reflective questions provide opportunity for Jesus followers to assess and strengthen their walks with the living Lord. I'm pleased to recommend the book to students and to church people alike!
The aim of these volumes is clear: as regards God's Word, rigor; as regards other scholars, respect; as regards current issues, relevance; as regards the Lord himself, reverence. Effective witness and ministry currently require more than simply extra effort and better methods: the call is heard from churches across the board for renewal in our grasp of Christian truth. Each author in this series contributes admirably to that urgent need.
John Harvey has done a remarkable thing. First, he analyzes each section of Scripture for what the Bible teaches about the Holy Spirit. Then he follows each section with a clear summary and concludes with "Lessons for Life"--warm applications of the biblical theology just expounded. That combination of theology and pastoral care is rare. I learned much, but even more was inspired to experience fresh aspects of life in the Spirit.
