Publisher's Description

Christian Encounters, a series of biographies from Thomas Nelson Publishers, highlights important lives from all ages and areas of the Church. Some are familiar faces. Others are unexpected guests. But all, through their relationships, struggles, prayers, and desires, uniquely illuminate our shared experience

When she arrived in the New World at eighteen, Anne Bradstreet was a reluctant passenger:

her old, comfortable lifestyle in England was quickly dashed against the rocks of the Massachusetts

Bay. While the wilderness of America and the drama of establishing the Massachusetts Bay Colony at times overwhelmed her, she always took refuge in the belief that it was God’s plan.  Anne respected the Puritan teachings and followed them her entire life, always searching for God’s hand in everything around her. But she also was inspired by a strong female leader of the day, Queen Elizabeth, and

this influence taught Anne to push herself beyond the day’s limitations. She managed her home, educated her children, encouraged her husband, and sought her Lord—all with a poet’s heart.

I enjoyed this book. I found that it was very informative and was historically accurate. This book is however very in depth about Anne Bradstreet's life. It's not a easy read and may take some readers a week to read others a month.

This book goes into Anne Bradstreet's life and shows how she goes from a young girl to a mother who not only raises godly children but also lives for God. It also includes some of her poetry.

Anne Bradstreet by D.B. Keller is a wonderful book for anyone. But, I would however not recommend it for young people under 14 as it deals with some adult issues. If however you are under 14 and want to read it please have a parent read it first.

I thought D.B. Keller did a wonderful job of illustrating Anne Bradstreet's godly life through this book and highly recommend it.

You may purchase Anne Bradstreet for $12 here.

Anne Bradstreet by D.B. Kellogg is a book I would recommend reading. It gives an accurate account of Anne Bradstreet, a remarkable, truly dedicated, Proverbs 31 woman. She took her role as a wife and mother seriously. She was married at the age of 16. She believed that God's hand was guiding her in every area of her life, that everything happened through the providential hand of God. Her husband was her "chiefest comforter on Earth" and she loved him deeply and was very thankful for God's provision in her life. It was important to her that she encourage her husband. She devoted her life to the Lord and to her family. Despite her ill health, she had 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls. She delighted in training her children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Education and Biblical teaching was an important part of the lives of her children. She was blessed with the gift of words for which she wrote many lovely poems. She endured many trials and hardships but through it all she gave God the glory in her life.

Last year, I made a conscious decision to read more biographies. My reasoning was that the actual stories of how God has worked in the lives of people were worth more than someone's fictional story (that is not to say that I am against fiction although I will admit that it has been a long time since a good fiction book has caught my attention). When I saw this book available for review on BookSneeze it seemed like a good book to match my decision.

I had not heard of Anne Bradstreet before reading this book, although she is known for her poetry. Her poetry was the first book published by a woman in America. Don't let the cover of this book keep you from reading it (there are no photos of Anne, this is an artist's perception, and a harsh one at that) as this is a good review of what life was like for the Puritans in New England in the 1600′s.

Several facts stood out to me about this biography. It is amazing that she could read and write as women in that time were not educated. Anne's parents were educated which provided her the same opportunities. Her ability to write expressively in her poetry is God-given and is still giving to us today.

Another fact was how much Anne loved her husband Simon. He traveled quite a bit and she would write longingly on how she missed him. I do not think of Puritan Women of being in love (shame on me). She also expressed her deep love for her 8 children just as any Mother. This book reminded me that God created women the same today as in the 1600′s (why do I think otherwise).

I enjoyed her poetry, which tell the story of her life (her poetry was what gave insight into her life, so this book could be written). Her trust in God was evident as she came to a new world and shared her thoughts through her words. This book is not a passionate read, but a good read to remember how God worked in the life of this Puritan Woman.

Highly Recommend! I am looking forward to reading more Christian Encounters books by Thomas Nelson as there are 13 in the series.

Reading Anne Bradstreet by D.B. Kellogg was like entering a different time and place. Anne grew up in England during the early 1600's before travelling to the new world at the age of 18. She didn't really want to leave the comforts and familiarity of England but her family and husband thought it best to go. Her belief in God and his faithfulness gave her strength and comfort. As a woman in the newly founded Massachusetts Bay Colony she faced many hardships, disappointments, and joys. She humbly supported her husband and raised their eight children relying on God's grace to carry her through.

Now, hundreds of years later, America is vastly different. I enjoyed exploring the world that Anne lived in as the author included much about her world; politics, culture, religion, family. Anne left a record of her thoughts and beliefs in her many poems. Although I'm not particularly interested in poems, I enjoyed learning about her life. Reading this book gave me a small taste of how the Puritans lived based on their beliefs and it encouraged me in my walk with the Lord.

Wife, Mother, Puritan, and a Poet, too!

Anne Bradstreet has impacted my life! I've read many biographies of many great people, but I identified with Anne, the Puritan more than any other. The country she helped create is mine and her God is mine as well! It was quite a shock to realize that I would have chosen to be a Puritan! They were not what I'd always believed them to be, but were simply a courageous, God fearing people who paved the way for our religious freedom. Anne Bradstreet was an integral part of the group who fled England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who chose to live according to the Word of God.

Of course Anne's life was very hard once she landed in America as she moved from place to place, struggling with a lifetime of sickness, tragedies and giving birth to her eight beloved children. In the midst of it all she was a prolific poet who influenced her world. Women in the 1600's were typically NOT writers, nor educated. One of the last things she wrote with a challenge, "Children do naturally rather follow the failings than the virtues of their predecessors, but I am persuaded better things of you" is one of my favorites.

This Christian Encounter series biography of Anne Bradstreet can be a comfort and challenge to us all as we read of a Christian woman who recognized her own failings, yet in the midst of it all, humbly raised a family, honored her husband and loved God with all heart, while remaining "above reproach".
