Touching and unique story, Kingsbury has done it again
    September 15, 2014

This review was written for Angels Walking, Angels Walking Series #1.
Karen Kingsbury has done it again. Angels Walking was a unique story that captivated. I know I said previously that I had felt her stories were becoming formulaic, even becoming boring. But this one was unique and piqued my interest.

Two angels, Beck and Ember, have been sent to Earth. The whole group of angels have a mission, and these two have been chosen to complete the first part of it: Tyler Ames. A former baseball star, who ruined his career and is trying to make his comeback. Until he cant. His first love, Sami, lives across the country, supposedly moved on.

My favorite part would have to be the angels. I actually wish there were more scenes from Beck and Ember's point of view. It was interesting to see the way they worked, the way they walked among the humans, watching, listening, and helping.

I also like how this was not really romance based. I mean, yes, Tyler was focused on his first love, Sami. And Sami was focused on first her boyfriend, and then Tyler. But the story focused more on Tyler, and his growth as a person.

I also loved Virginia and her part of the story. She was so sweet, and just lent a wonderful side to the story and to Tyler's growth and discovery.

Does this still have the everything-works-out perfectly in an almost unrealistic way? Yes. But it is a book about miracles. And this was a great, invested read. It definitely kept me interested the entire time. I already need the next one!

When I first saw this book I thought it was another non-fiction book, and I wasn't very interested. After I got into it I realized it was written as a fiction book but with real truths involved, just like Karen Kingsbury always does. I believe there are angels among us, existing in the spiritual world as well as appearing here on earth without us realizing it. The Bible even says so in Hebrews 13:2. The story is about Tyler and Sami. They grew up together and were first loves. All Tyler lived, breathed, ate, slept, and studied since he was 4 years old was baseball. His dream was to get to the big leagues eventually. When he turned down a full scholarship to UCLA for the draft his parents turned their backs on him and Sami broke up with him. He spent lots of time in the minors and when his perfect night of pitching finally came into being and he knew scouts were in the stands, he threw his final pitch of the game and disaster happened. He faced an injury that was painful, being thrown off the team, no insurance to cover surgery, being kicked out of his residence because of lack of funds, and living in his car with little money to eat on. Rock bottom! How do angels play a part in all this? You will read about Tyler finding help and friends who do not care about his career, only about him as a person. This book shows about real love, forgiveness, God's Grace, and new beginnings. I am intrigued, as I'm sure I was meant to be, about a baby yet to be born, but not from Tyler and Sami. Dallas Garner, a great teacher who will turn hearts back to God. Yes, this is a series, and if it's anything like the Baxter series, then I'm sold!

Karen Kingsbury has a real talent for crafting characters, situations, and scenes that tug at a reader's heartstrings. Her most recent book, Angels Walking, is first in a new series and does exactly that.

Tyler and Sami are each striving for perfection in some area of their lives. The weight of unmet expectations and sacrifices made in other areas of their lives has separated them and changed them each in detrimental ways since they first met and fell in love. This book explores restoring broken relationships, regaining faith, and discovering that God really can bring good things out of what may look like impossible situations.

I loved the way the romance played out. The gradual reconnection and uncertain hope made sense given the circumstances. And there were a few heartrendingly wonderful scenes that made me long for things to work out for Tyler and Sami. They really did seem perfectly suited for each other.

Another element I enjoyed was the complex intertwining of the various characters' lives. It was neat to watch how seemingly insignificant interactions could add up to have a big impact in the long run.

I was a little less enthusiastic about the scenes from the angels' perspectives. The angels felt a bit more human than I expected, with their doubts and uncertainties about the future. Plus, I felt like the premise of their mission had (maybe unintended?) theological implications that I didn't necessarily agree with. The idea that there's one specific child not yet born who will be a great teacher and that "The salvation of countless souls depends on this child" (from the Prologue) seemed a little off to me. I'm not an expert or a theologian by any means, but it's my understanding that God can and does use anyone willing, to achieve His purposes, and empowers them to do what's necessary. The idea that God's plans can't go forward if one particular person isn't born? Not sure I'm buying it. Then again, I may be reading more into this than was intended.

All nitpicking aside, I did thoroughly enjoy the story, and the idea that there's more at stake than just the hearts and souls of Tyler and Sami themselves is an appealing one, so I'm not going to complain too loudly on this point.

I'm definitely curious to find out how this angelic team's future missions will go and to learn more details about what they're trying to achieve and why. The epilogue in particular piqued my curiosity about what comes next in the series. Sounds like the next book could turn out to be a really exciting one.

My favorite parts of this installment were the touching and emotionally stirring scenes included. There were a few points where I found myself crying. The storytelling made me really empathize with the characters, feeling their fears, regrets, and disappointments right along with them, which made me want to root for them all the more.

A big thank you to Howard Books for supplying an advance reader copy of Angels Walking through Netgalley for purposes of this review. I would gladly recommend this book to fans of Karen Kingsbury's other books and to anyone who enjoys a good story centered around the themes of grace and reconciliation.

If you have a minute, and you're not already rushing to go out and purchase the book (or even if you are), check out the book trailer for this one. It's very well made with a great sound track and images, and seems true to the book.

Karen Kingsbury in her new book, Angels Walking Book One in the Angels Walking series published by Howard Books takes us into the life of Tyler Ames.

From the back cover: Somewhere in Heaven, a decision has been made. An Angels Walking team has been assigned to a desperate mission: a broken baseball player, the love he left behind and the miracle that might save a whole city. When angels walk, most people never know, never see. Bu they are there. And sometimes the stakes are so high, all of Heaven stands ready.

When former national baseball star Tyler Ames suffers a career-ending injury, all he can think about is putting his life back together the way it was before. He has lost everyone he loves on his way to the big leagues. Then just when things seem to be turning around, Tyler hits rock bottom. Across the country, Tylers one true love Sami Dawson has moved on.

A series of small miracles leads Tyler to a maintenance job at a retirement home and a friendship with Virginia Hutcheson, an old woman with Alzheimers who strangely might have the answers he so desperately seeks.

A team of Angels Walking take on the mission to restore hope for Tyler, Sami, and Virginia. Can such small and seemingly insignificant actions of the unseen bring healing and redemption? And can the words of a stranger rekindle lost love? Every journey begins with a step.

It is time for the mission to begin

I like the concept for this series: angels come to look out for us and help us in our situations. God tells us He has given His angels charge over us so this series fits in perfectly there. I think this may be Ms. Kingsbury at her finest. I am not going to rehash the plot for you. You really need to read this book for yourself. You will be glad you did. Tyler, Samantha, Virginia and Cheryl are four individuals in need of help. All kinds of events are happening and, it turns out, they need each other. What really is the star of the show are the angels helping to move them into place and for the healings to begin. Keep in mind if there are angels in the story then, by necessity, there must be demons and spiritual warfare. Angels Walking is one inspiring, romantic book. Issues of faith, emotional healing, dealing with trauma and loss and love fill the pages. Ms. Kingsbury has given us a great ride in this book and she has provided us with wonderful characters that we rally around and root for.

I have never read Karen Kingbury's fictional stories before. After reading Angels Walking, it is no wonder why she is so popular. If her other works are anything like this one, then I am a new fan. I will definitely be looking for more books by her.

Angels Walking starts off with angels, Beck and Ember, being sent to help Tyler Ames and his old flame, Samantha Dawson.

Tyler is in the big leagues of baseball as a pitcher. After an injury, his life spirals out of control. Which leads him to a new special friend. And what a special bond they have.

Samantha is now successful in her career. She has an ambitious boyfriend and everything seems perfect for her until she comes across an article detailing Tyler's injury.

Oh, how does this one injury change so many lives.

I love this book. The characters are great, the storyline is great, and the moral of the story is great. I cannot wait for book 2 of the series to release.

    I highly recommend this book.

    Five stars.

I received this book from Howard Books in exchange for my honest opinion, which was given.
