Product Description

The Johannine literature of the NT stands second only to the Pauline corpus in its contribution to our understanding of Christ and his work. Yet, it is a fundamentally different perspective, one that focuses more on who Christ in his person is, and the relationship of Christ to God. It is more narrative drive, like the Old Testament, but powerful and sublime nevertheless.

The Epistles of John are a companion to John's use of narrative, and though it is more propositional in form, the writing and abstract conceptuality of the book are rivaled in profundity by the books of Revelation and the Gospel of John.

In the New Testament Library commentary on I, II, & III John Judith Lieu tackles these profoundly theological "letters" not just in terms of thought, but in relationship to their historical context and to the ways the book has been (correctly or incorrectly) received in the Christian tradition.

Publisher's Description

The New Testament's three letters attributed to John have always provided remarkable theological riches for the Christian tradition, including the assertion "God is love." Each letter shows how an early Christian author responded to threats against authority by recourse to the correct teachings of the faith and a proper understanding of the relationship between Jesus and God. Together, these letters argue for a bond of unity among believers, based on fidelity to the truth of God.

The New Testament Library offers authoritative commentary on every book and major aspect of the New Testament, as well as classic volumes of scholarship. The commentaries in this series provide fresh translations based on the best available ancient manuscripts, offer critical portrayals of the historical world in which the books were created, pay careful attention to their literary design, and present a theologically perceptive exposition of the text.

Judith Lieu gives readers an in-depth look at the three letters of John, although, as might be expected, the vast majority of the book is devoted to 1 John. The 32 page introduction includes a good discussion of the historical context of the letters and their thought and importance. Lieu sees the purpose of 1 John as not so much to refute heresy as to reaffirm for its readers some of the basics of Christian theology which they already know. While I did not always find her arguments fully persuasive, overall her take on John's letters reflects solid scholarship.
